Four

The Black Forest, Allegra

“Anything?” Matthew asks Alois worriedly as the man sticks his head through a large hole that they had found in the side of the ship they had been digging out for the past four or so hours.

Alois’s voice echoes inside of the ship as he answers without pulling out, “Can’t say for sure… there is some stuff in here though.”

“Think it’s the seeder ship?” Louise asks expectantly.

Matthew looks up from where Alois is and he scans the dig site. They had all been digging diligently this whole time and the hole they were rewarded with was meager, to say the least. It was difficult for even three people to stand side by side at the bottom of the elongated hole where Alois is.

Besides this hole, there are several smaller ones that everyone had been digging on their own prior to Louise’s finding the first part of the ship. Once her shovel struck its hull, Matthew and the others all joined her to clear out an area large enough to get down beside the ship.

Alois pulls his head out of the hole in the ship and shakes his head, “No, looks too small to be the seeder.”

“Think it’s worth checking out?” Matthew asks as he peers into the hole Alois is in and tries to see into the ship.

Alois smirks, “I think everything is worth checking out.”

“We’ll watch ou’ ‘ere,” Cruz volunteers himself and his people for guard duty, “Y’all can go in if you like.”

“After you, mudskipper,” Louise nods to him, “It was your idea to go in there, after all.”

Matthew nods and, without a second thought, he hops down into the hole beside Alois. Again, he doesn’t wait and he then crawls through the hole in the side of the ship.

Dropping down a meter or so, Matthew lands harder than intended and he hurts his wrist as he catches himself. Quickly shrugging off the pain, he rises to his feet, and he shines his rifle-mounted flashlight around the small cabin that he is in. The room is clearly warped, and Matthew can immediately see that the craft would not be able to fly any time soon. It was thoroughly wrecked.

“Looks like it’s clear,” Matthew tells Alois, who is watching him from his hole.

Matthew passively listens as Alois passes the message along to the others. While listening, Matthew begins poking around through some of the busted open crates that had been thrown around the cabin as the ship crashed. Large dents are scattered all over the twisted walls of the cabin Matthew is in and he can tell that the crates had been what caused the damage.

Behind him, Matthew hears the others dropping in and they begin clearing the rooms that are adjacent to the one Matthew is in. A few minutes pass of everyone poking around before Matthew stops outside of a door that Alois had been trying to open.

“Seems pretty stuck,” Alois notes.

“Well, who said this was going to be easy?” Matthew asks with a chuckle.
