Chapter 8

They can’t be inside, she told herself as she maneuvered towards the door. Not yet. Not so soon. Despite the screams of her brain, she needed to know what was lurking inside the room. It took some maneuvering, but she managed to drag herself closer to the door.

They can’t be inside, Ruby told herself as she turned her wheelchair, facing the door directly, the hairs on the back of her neck prickling. Not yet. Not so soon.

Almost in mockery of her thoughts, the giggling continued. The sound had taken on a raspy edge. Something cold and dark that made her want to run. There was no movement now. The sound had a fixed point. Whatever was laughing at her was inside Tristan's room.

Ruby's first instinct surprised her. It wasn't fight or flight. It was ignorance. She wanted to keep the door closed and ignore whatever was lurking, hoping it would disappear like all the other hallucinations the black eyed children had shoved into her brain. But it didn't matter how much she wanted to wrap herself in oblivion. She couldn't take that path and she knew it.

The possibilities would torment her. Birthing beasts and monsters from the darkest recesses of her mind. Not knowing would drive her mad and leave her vulnerable. If something was inside the apartment with her, she needed to know what it was. And that was something she couldn't fight or deny.

Positioning the chair at the right angle to open the door wasn't an easy task. She divided her attention between the door before her and the entrance behind. A little voice in the back of her head told her that an attack would come from one of these two directions. But she couldn't decide which. The sensation left her feeling like a deer caught out in the open. Weak, exposed, and just waiting for the hunter to decide it was time to end it.

Every hair on her body rose in unison as the sensation of being watched settled upon her. She looked around once more, checking shadows that clung to every corner and gap. She couldn't see a single thing out of place, but that did nothing to diminish the feeling that crawled over her skin like insects. With one hand closing around her Taser, Ruby turned back to the door.

Tristan never locked it. There was no need. So she knew that one turn of the handle was all that stood between her and whatever lay beyond. Clutching the thick handle of her Taser, she reached up with her free hand. The tarnished metal of the doorknob felt like a slab of ice in her palm. Swallowing down her rising panic, she glanced over her shoulder once more, prayed that she wasn't walking into a trap, and slowly opened the door. The angle was awkward as she refused to let go of the handle. But she wasn't about to sacrifice the ability to slam the door shut if the need arose.

The laughter stopped as she widened the gap just a little more.
