Chapter 16
"As much as I find your assumptions interesting, I doubt Gabriel would ever do something illegal,â I said. âI cannot find any reasoning for Gabriel to resort to black market trading when he is beyond rich.â
âWe believe it is more than black market trading. There are potential supernatural aspects to this situation, Miss Costin. I hope you realize Mr. Stoica is not your regular billionaire.â
âI havenât met many billionaires to be able to give you a valid comparison, but one thing I am sure of. Gabriel would never do anything illegal since he simply doesnât need it and itâs not in his character to do so. I rather believe you want something from him and are using me to get access to him,â I said and stood.
âI see he has been telling you stories,â he said.
âWhat if the one telling stories is you, Mr. Iglesias?â
âOnly time will tell,â he said.
âIndeed, one thing you and I do have in common is time. Good day, Mr. Iglesias,â I said and went for the door.
Mr. Iglesias followed behind. âIf you somehow develop even an inkling of doubt about your fiancé, please donât hesitate to call the number you have. Someone will answer no matter what.â
âHow did you know heâs my fiancé?â
âThe ring is hard to miss, lovely Petra,â said Mr. Iglesias.
âNow weâre both on first-name terms?â I kept walking ahead of him, eager to get out of this situation.
âIf you are in need of a friend who can keep a secret, you know where to find me,â he said and stopped at the buildingâs entrance.
I, on the other hand, rushed to get out and walked faster toward Gabriel. Once he saw me, Gabriel cut his phone call short and wrapped a hand around my waist. He scrutinized Mr. Iglesias, who did the same in return. They spoke solely with their eyes, and it didnât seem amicable. Then he turned, and we walked to the parking lot.
âWas this your professor?â Gabriel asked.
âYes, Mr. Iglesias taught me history,â I said.
âAnd what did he wish to talk to you about?â he asked.
âSince Iâm a history major, he wanted to know what my plans for the future are.â I didnât know why I lied. It was the first time I did it so blatantly to Gabrielâs face.
âDoes he do so with every student of his?â
âPretty much. I guess he wants to make sure we make something of our degree,â I said.
âAnd do you want to make something of your degree?â Gabriel asked.
âI always wanted to research Eastern European history and write books about it. At first, I thought Iâd advance my knowledge by going to grad school and, who knows, a Ph.D., but I kind of accidentally went straight to the source. Iâm not sure I need to study from a book when Iâve experienced it in real life.â
âYou might as well sit at a desk and write,â said Gabriel as he unlocked the car.
âI donât think anyone would believe me without any proof,â I said.
âThat might be an easier fix than you think,â he said.
