“If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees.” – Khalil Gibran

Chapter Ten: ‘Welcome to New York’

Bishop woke before the dawn and did his daily routine of twenty grueling minutes grinding out five hundred pushups, sit-ups and leg squats. Then he quietly left the house and went for a thirty minute run on the rocky beach below the house, sprinting for the last quarter mile while evading the jagged granite stones with practiced ease. Even with his enhanced metabolism, he had maintained the harsh exercise regimen all his adult life.

The sun was just peeking over the horizon when he returned and started a kettle of water for tea and a pot of coffee. After a quick shower and once again dressed (and armed) in his habitual black suit, he brewed a strong pot of tea and retired to the porch to think. The Pixies would wake up in about another hour with massive hangovers and be utterly useless for hours – hence his rare allowance of “Nom Noms”.

Quite aside from his personal feelings for Louise, the strategist in him had to consider the advantages her unique immunity might present. But for all she might be able to contribute, she was still a ‘civilian’, thrust into this situation by the plain dumb luck of having chosen the wrong neighbors. Any participation she might have in his missions would have to be her own decision.

He heard a quiet clatter in the kitchen and in a moment, Louise joined him on the porch with a steaming mug of coffee, dressed in a bathrobe and slippers.

She looked Bishop up and down, taking in his wide awake and fully dressed appearance. “Oh God, you’re one of those aren’t you?”

“I beg your pardon?”

Louise waved her hand up and down. “Look at you. Wide awake, scrubbed and clean, all before the sun came up. Let me guess; you’ve already done a bunch of morning exercises too, right?”

Bishop shrugged and nodded.

She flopped into a chair. “It’s that military thing. George was the same way. Didn’t matter if we were on vacation in Hawaii; he was up at the same ungodly hour every day. How far did you run?”

“I limited myself to a short three miles today,” Bishop replied with an embarrassed grin.

“When was the last time you slept late?” Louise asked.

Bishop gave this some thought and sipped his tea. During his years in the army, that was never an option and his duties to Master ‘S’ began at sunrise when the Vampire retired for the day.

“In all honestly, I believe that would be never,” he answered. “At least not that I can recall.”

“Ugh,” Louise said, shaking her head. “Thank you for at least having the decency to be quiet and make coffee. Three bottles of wine on top of a meal that will add four inches to my hips last night? The only way I’m running today is if a dog is chasing me.”

Bishop smiled. “Nonsense, Madame. You look delightful.
