I am finishing up at 3 am with my last letter … & you will hear nothing more for a year. However, you will know that I am having & have struck the most glorious of jobs in a climate that suits me in every way, with a great object [and] a responsible position. … I dare say you will think I have been working too hard. Well I have not nearly reached the limit of my capacity … I never seem tired only sleepy at times & the hours fly. … you would not believe the work there is in preparing everything for a big sledge journey. … Capt. Scott is simply extraordinarily nice to me & I cannot help feeling that I am going to hit it off with him permanently. Our special sledging kit has required much preparation & sewing … I have changed mine as little as possible so as to evolve my own ideas from personal experience. … The actual windproof kit … consist[s] of a helmet, blouse & breeks; only Wolsey underwear is worn underneath & our allowance of spare gear including all other clothing, books, tobacco etc is 12 lbs. … As to whether we are coming back next year or not I cannot say & more ponies or dogs or rather mules & dogs are being ordered as well as provisions – it all depends of course as whether the pole is reached next Summer. … you will hear if you get into communication with Mrs Scott & Mrs Wilson … I will write much of the winter & tell you everything, in the meantime make my apologies to those I ought to have written to.
