Chapter Fifteen

Lilah

I TAPPED THE PEN AGAINST my bottom lip, furrowed my brow, and stared at the numbers in front of me. They were all starting to squiggle together into one big mess, and I wasn’t sure that I could make anything of them one way or another.

“You all right?” Damian asked as he returned from collecting our Chinese food. He dumped it out on the table in front of us.

I nodded, stretched, and yawned. “Just in need of a little sustenance,” I replied as I reached happily for the food. “You arrived just in time.”

“Tell me about it.” He tore open one of the bags and grabbed a handful of crackers that he started to munch on at once.

The two of us were spending another late night at the office in the hopes of getting this work done by the end of the week. When I had agreed to help out with his projections, I hadn’t imagined that they would require quite this much math work from me, and I could feel my brain actually beginning to ache in my head as I looked over the numbers in front of me once again.

“You should have called up my brother for this, not me,” I remarked before I took a bite of a spring roll dunked in plum sauce. “He’s the one who’s actually good at math.”

“You’re doing a great job,” he said. “Better than I could have done by myself.”

“You’re paying me, you know?” I teased him. “You don’t have to flatter me too.”

“I’m not doing anything of the sort,” he shot back with a grin. “I’m paying you, so I can say what I want, right?”

“I guess so,” I conceded, and I covered my mouth so I didn’t spray a mouthful of food at him as I spoke.

We might have been getting a little less formal in the time we had spent together, but that didn’t mean he wanted to see what I was eating as I was eating it.

“So, your brother,” he said. “He’s the more technical-minded one in the family?”

“I think that they all are really.” I sighed, reaching for my water bottle so I could take a swig. “Everyone but me.”

“What do you mean?” he asked, lifting his gaze from the work in front of him and looking at me. Something about being the focus of his gaze like that made my heart skip around in my chest, and I did my best not to pay any attention to it.

“I suppose I just mean that I’m the odd one out there,” I said. “My brother and sister, Matt and Emma, they’re really good at what they do. And they always have been, too. He works in accounting and she’s—uh, something in TV production, I think. I’ve never really quite understood it when she’s tried to tell me.”

“I always find that with people who work in entertainment,” he said. “They obscure things with enough made-up titles until it gets to the point where you realize they’re just trying to hide the fact that they’re the ones getting the coffee for the directors or something.
