But even closing his eyes while the room whirled around him, and then opening them again, didn’t make the illusion vanish. He tried rubbing his eyelids in an effort to wipe his vision clear of what he’d seen, but once again failed to make the horrifying sight disappear.

He slid to the ground, his limbs suddenly unable to support him. His fingers clutched the railing, and he pressed his forehead between two wooden rails. Part of him wanted to stumble back to his room, but another part—the hungry, desperate, wanton part of him—urged him to stay.
