CHAPTER 20
Gina met Carrie at the Westin hotel on Union Square for lunch, wearing red faux snakeskin sliders, a skirt that skimmed over her slender hips and flat stomach before flaring out at the knee, and a fitted, long-sleeved cotton blouse that accentuated her bust line. Her long hair was pulled softly into a high ponytail, leaving tendrils around her oval face. Carrie wore comfortable loafers, beige Capri pants and a plain white tailored shirt cinched at the waist by a colorful, cloth belt. She hid her slender frame under a bulky cardigan the same color as the blue in the belt. Her fine hair was loose and hung straight to the top of her shoulders.
âWeâre going to have some fun today!â Gina exclaimed when she first saw Carrie. There was no judgment in her expression about how Carrie was dressed. All Gina saw was her friend coming toward her with a mixed expression of fear and excitement. âWhatâs the budget?â
âNo budget. I want to do this right.â
âThatâs good. Do you know how hard it was to get a last minute appointment at Chez Feliz? And Feliz never works on Sundayâexcept for celebrities, and then he gets top dollar. Thatâs our first stop. After your haircut, weâll go to Saks and the boutiques on Maiden Lane.â
It was an exhausting day for both women and Carrie had never had so much fun. Gina was an expert in fashion and even made a few suggestions to Feliz about Carrieâs hair and makeup. He balked at Ginaâs interfering suggestions a few times, but finally agreed Gina had a good feel for how to bring out Carrieâs best features.
It was a new Carrie striding through the lobby of Kendall Technologies on Monday morning. She even got a few double-takes from the guys in sales when she stopped in to talk about their new client in London.
âWow, Carrie! What happened to you?â Benton Swank was the first to voice his appreciation. Everyone else was professionally respectful of their future boss.
âThanks, I think, Benton. Iâll assume thatâs a positive reaction to my haircut.â
âItâs more than the haircut, Carrie. You look great and rested too. Must have been a good weekend.â
âI decided that while some changes are needed here, that I should start with myself and thatâs all there is to it.â Carrie wasnât going to discuss her personal makeover with anyone, especially with Benton, where the sabotage of her credibility had all begun.
âGood morning, Gina,â Carrie said with a straight face while passing Ginaâs desk.
They were back to the charade.
Gina stood up from her bogus letters and followed Carrie. Closing the office door, Gina said, âYou look fantastic!â
âI feel fantastic.â Carrie let herself laugh. âI feel so good!â
âWhatâs going on today? How are we going to get this thing moving with Baker?â
âI gave it a lot of thought last night. Would you check with Benita, Bakerâs assistant, about his schedule this week? See if sheâll tell you where heâll be and when. The pretense is that Iâll schedule myself to attend those meetings, but back out and send you instead.
