Chapter Six

Liz

I continued making calls and checking websites of the developers who might have availability. Most of them were hesitant to take on such a big, high-profile job this late in the game. I couldn’t blame them.

I could blame me, however. Samantha Fox would have been perfect but we’d lost her because of my own distraction. The team blamed me, too—I’d seen their frustrated expressions during that meeting.

“Hello?” a female voice said. “This is Angelica Kanesh.”

“Oh, hi.” I fumbled with the phone. I’d been expecting another voicemail to pick up, because the phone had rung so many times. “My name is Liz Tolbert—I mean, sorry, Liz Mason”—now that was a Freudian slip if I’d ever made one—“and I’m calling from Tolbert Developments.”

“Yes?”

“We’re a company that specializes in games and apps, and we’re looking to get our site redesigned.”

“Oh, sure!” she said. “Let me grab my calendar.”

“Before you do that, I have to tell you this is a rush job.”

“Oh.”

One syllable that said everything. There weren’t many names left on Samantha Fox’s list of recommendations.

“What’s the timeline?” she asked.

“Two weeks?” I said, internally wincing.

I could already hear her clicking away at a computer keyboard. “Your company looks very impressive,” she said. “Lots of projects in the works—I’m looking at the site you have up now. So, here’s the thing.”

I waited with bated breath, tracing the edge of my desk with a fingernail. I was running out of hope.

“I want in,” she said. “I would love to work with you guys. But two weeks—that’s just impossible. I have other clients who booked me weeks ago.”

“Yes, that seems to be standard,” I said, miserably.

“But if you could get another developer on board, I’d be willing to collaborate. All of this in the hopes that you guys call me the next time you need something done… and you give me a bit more advance notice.”

My heart sped up. This wasn’t a yes but it was an almost. I’d take it. “Okay,” I said. “I’ll run it by the team but I’m pretty sure everyone would be on board with these conditions. Do you have any developers in mind?”

She rattled off a couple of names, which I jotted onto the legal pad next to my computer. “If you can get either of them on board, I’m in.”

“I’ll be back in touch soon,” I promised.

As soon as we ended the call, I dialed the first name she’d mentioned. No one answered the phone, so I dialed the next person.

“Jon Templeton,” he answered.

I explained the situation and how Angelica had recommended him. After a brief pause, he said, “Okay. I’ll do it. As a favor to Angelica. And a good paycheck, I’m assuming.”

“Yes, of course. You’ll be generously compensated,” I said, relaying the amount Jamie had most recently approved.

I had him hold while I dialed Angelica, so we could have a brief group meeting to get oriented. While they chatted, I sent out an interoffice message, letting everyone know that I’d found two web developers to collaborate.
