The US government encouraged individuals to grow produce in their own back yards to stabilize the output of goods going overseas. Victory gardens provided produce that was not otherwise available, as shown in this photograph. Urban dwellers without yards often created gardens in window boxes or on apartment rooftops. Schools often set aside land to plant gardens that were tended by students.
