Cassia escorted me back through the maze after the meeting with Luc. He’d come across as a decent male—straightforward, honest, and patient. His easy demeanor hadn’t been enough to distract me from wondering about the heightened security around here. Still, I didn’t want to push my luck by asking when I’d just narrowly landed the job.
By the time we arrived at a door that led outside, I was totally turned around. Cassia told me she needed to stick around because there was some paperwork she needed to fill out over a bounty she’d accidentally killed last week. She huffed over the inconvenience. “Where are we at on your end of our current job?”
“I still need to get into that laptop I found at Kannon’s girlfriend’s house. Shit’s been a little crazy. I’ll spend the rest of the day working on it. Also, I’m still waiting on some info on the girlfriend. I’ve been having some trouble getting in touch with the team that’s supposed to supply it.”
Nodding while she considered everything I’d said, Cassia exclaimed, “Good! It sounds like we’re making progress. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but some jobs are complicated like this. It takes slow, methodical research to track down your prey. You’re a natural!” Slapping me on the back, she opened the door, letting me stumble past her—narrowly escaping a bite by one of her lovely hair strands.
I didn’t care what Cassia said. Those little bastards were out to get me.
Her boisterous cackling was the last I heard from her before the door slammed shut.
Out of nowhere, hairy knuckles crashed into my solar plexus, sending me stumbling backward and gasping for breath. My bowie knives whispered from their sheaths; the cold metal handles encased in my hands before I fully recovered from the attack. My assailant stood watching me, long strands of drool hanging from his pale green lips. A jogath. Keeping him in sight, I scanned the rest of the area while sidestepping toward the wall to avoid being jumped from behind. Another three pale-green giants stepped out of the shadows to join my attacker.
How was everyone suddenly able to do magic they shouldn’t have available to them? Vampires were teleporting themselves, and now jogath were shadow stepping. What bullshit! I wanted some useful extra magic too.
Then again, I did have extra powers—ones for every conceivable situation. They just weren’t as powerful as a natural-born’s. Holding my ground, I opted not to shift forms yet. Yes, the ugly buggers lumbering toward me were tough mo'fos. I was outnumbered, but if I didn’t absolutely have to expose my race to more demons, I’d rather not. I had enough names to track down and silence before this was over—and I wasn’t even getting paid to do it. I was faster than they were, no matter what form I chose.
A natural-born succubus could dial up her pheromones and turn her attackers on one another for her attention. Confident I wasn’t strong enough to do anything more than piss them off, not all four of them at once, I ran through my remaining options.
