Chapter Sixteen

“I miss you,” Lauren said, surprising herself with her candidness.

“I miss you, too,” Thea replied. And the sigh that followed told Lauren that Thea was on the same page as her.

Thea had called her the afternoon after they’d parted ways to tell her about her friend Avni. She’d felt like Avni was in too fragile a state to be left alone, so they’d rescheduled their date night. Which was certainly a bummer, but Lauren got it. She’d been able to crash Trina’s auntie duties that night, so she’d soaked up the baby snuggles and kicked some serious ass at Uno. But not seeing Thea had affected her more than she’d expected.

“I feel like it’s been a week,” she complained.

“It’s been half a week, and I hate everything,” Thea said.

Lauren smiled. “What are you doing right now?”

“Pretending to work. Failing miserably. Thinking of you. Wishing you were here.”

“How’s Avni?”

“I think she’s working through her third stage of grief at the moment. We’re done burning his things and have now moved on to wondering whether we made the right choice. We think we did. But we’re sorting through it.”

“I love how you say we,” Lauren replied.

“Well, I kind of feel like the other woman in the situation. Since she’s bunking with me while this whole thing goes down, it certainly feels like I’m involved.”

“It’s good of you to do that. You’re a good person,” Lauren said.

“Thank you,” Thea replied. “But I don’t feel like a good person when I’m thinking about ways I can sneak out and see you without her noticing. That makes me feel bad. Very bad.”

“Why does that turn me on?” Lauren asked, teasing.

“Because you are sick and twisted and perfect for me,” Thea replied. “That’s why.”

“Are you free for lunch?” Lauren asked as she looked at the clock. She had an appointment in a couple of hours, but right now she was just cold-calling some people for Newbridge research.

“Define free,” she teased.

“This is that cheap date conversation again when I just want you to be easy, isn’t it?”

“Oh, we both know I’m easy.”

“Then say yes.”

“Yes.”

Lauren cheered. “I’ll be by in thirty.”

“I can’t wait.”

Lauren called in a lunch order at the deli a few doors down as she packed up the contents of her desk. She could do most of her work remotely, as long as she had a cell signal. As she shuffled the files into her bag, she paused. The Boudreaux file was the thickest, most complicated file on her desk. And there was still no answer to be had regarding the future of the farm.

She’d met with Ellison and gone over the numbers that Faith had given her. Now she was just waiting to hear back about the potential interested buyer Faith had mentioned. She had every intention of tagging along to that walk-through if it ended up happening, but she hadn’t relayed that information to Kathleen yet. Or to Thea.

Thea. She had a feeling Thea wasn’t going to like what she had to say. But the truth was, the numbers weren’t working out in her family’s favor.
