CHAPTER 11

ELI

Court leaves with her aunt not long after Oliver and the rest of her friends from Reagan Academy. I don’t blame her after his expression went all cold when she said she was going to leave with her aunt instead of him. I push down my anger that Oliver doesn’t trust her around me. Yes, it’s true, I’ve been trying to figure out how to make her see me as more than a friend since I met her, but Oliver doesn’t know that. Court only thinks of me as a friend, and him getting upset over nothing is a red flag for me. I hope she realizes it soon, and not just because it means I’d have a chance. I want Court to be happy, most of all.

Once she leaves, I rummage around Mila’s kitchen for something I can use to take home a bunch of cookies and some of the bread. There’s still a lot left, which doesn’t surprise me, considering most of the party attendees are actor friends of Mila’s. I think Court and her friends were the only ones who took slices of the homemade French bread. I’m absolutely taking home the half of a loaf that’s left. My sister’s fabulous baking skills is one of the things I miss about her living with me.

When I can’t find any storage containers, I turn to ask Mila, and locate her out on the small balcony of the apartment with Jack. She has her hands on his upper arms, squeezing them, and he’s wrapped his arms around her waist. She looks up at him, crying, and I abandon my search for something to take the baked goods home in, striding across the room without even thinking about it. That might be a big brother thing, exacerbated by my many current frustrations.

“Everything okay out here?” I ask when I’ve pushed open the door. It’s creepy how much I sound like my dad, and I’m not even sorry about it.

“Jack has to go to Canada next week!” Mila wails, dropping her face into Jack’s chest. He turns and frowns at me, looking pained, although I can’t believe he’s as upset about it as Mila is. He landed the part of a lifetime, and it’s hard for me to consider the possibility that my sister’s important to him.

I swallow. “Oh. Well …” I’m not sure what to say next. Good. It’s about time he was out of your life. I don’t think Mila would appreciate that.

“Can we get some time alone, please?” Mila asks in a watery voice. “I need to savor every moment.”

Gag. “Yeah. Of course. I’m going to head out, so … thanks for the party.”

“You’re welcome.” Mila waves at me to go, so I turn and escape the balcony.

When I step back inside, I catch sight of one of Mila’s roommates, Layla, glaring out the sliding door. This is the first time I’ve seen her at the party, and I wonder where she’s been. When she meets my gaze, she forces a smile and whirls away, joining the conversation of another group nearby.
