Carnival celebrations in Ptuj, known as Kurentovanje, take place in the 10 days running up to Shrove Tuesday. This raucous street party involves local men dressing up as Kurent (or Korant), a god of hedonism. These kurenti are clad in sheepskin cloaks with cowbells hung around their waists, and wear terrifying masks with beaky noses, large white teeth and protruding bright-red tongues. The men rampage through the streets, from house to house, making a terrible din with their bells. The tradition apparently harks back to pagan fertility rites: the kurenti are supposed to chase out the winter and welcome in the spring.
