Drowning
WENDIE
I cling to Peter as he flies us over the island, leaving everyone else behind. The fact that heâs allowing me to fly with him should make me feel special, and I do, but my elation is tainted, knowing that the rest of the group has to continue to trudge through the forest.
âWhy donât you let them fly as well?â I ask, regretting the question as soon as the words have passed my lips.
Peterâs grip around me tightens, and I avoid looking at him. If I do, Iâll forget how wrong this entire situation is. Peter will draw me in with his starry-eyed gaze, and I fear that if I fall into him again, climbing my way back out will be harder than it has ever been.
âThey fly when they come to Neverland,â he replies.
So you can lure them in.
But I donât say it out loud. I donât want to anger him. If only he could see how badly heâs affecting everyone. Those who still love him do so for all the wrong reasons, and those who donât have no way out.
âI meant now,â I say. âTo get to the lagoon faster.â
âWalking is good for them. It makes them stronger.â
âWhy are you letting me fly?â I ask.
âBecause, Wendie, youâre special.â He holds me tighter.
I focus on Neverland to distract myself from Peter. From the way heâs holding me so close, and how warm his body is pressed up against mine. Itâs as though his very presence has an effect on me that I canât control, and avoiding his gaze doesnât help. I scan the island below, and what must be Mermaid Lagoon spreads out before us. Mermaids lounge in the sun on a rock in the centre of the lagoon. The surface of the water ripples and breaks with more flipping tails.
âI see why itâs called Mermaid Lagoon,â I say, more to myself than to Peter.
âYou must be careful of them,â Peter says. âThe mermaids canât be trusted.â
And you can?
He turns his head, and this time I canât resist looking into his eyes. My heartbeat calms as a shiver of anticipation runs through me, and I fall into him. All thoughts of mermaids and mistrust dissipate until I donât recall what we were even talking about.
The boy with stars in his eyes studies me, and in the back of my mind, I know everything about Peter is wrong. The way I feel. The way he makes me feel.
Itâs all wrong.
But then he smiles, and everything feels right.
For a moment.
I blink to clear the fog that has settled over my thoughts. A voice in the back of my head, my voice, claws its way forward, screaming for me to push him away. But my body wonât obey. Still, it helps long enough for the edge of my anger to cut me.
âWhy am I special, Peter?â I hold his stare, fighting his intoxication and my raging emotions.
âI brought you here to look after everyone. And to keep Neverland alive.â He brushes a
