Tyler is not an avowed white nationalist, and neither are most people who retreat into whiteness. A helpful resource for determining how far down the rabbit hole of bigotry someone has gone and what to do in response is the toolkit, “Confronting Conspiracy Theories and Organized Bigotry at Home,” published by the Western States Center. It describes five levels of indoctrination, ranging from accidental absorption to calls for violence, and provides a conversation guide to help you stay connected and react responsibly to someone expressing bigoted ideas.79

Dear Reader: If the idea of engaging with someone retreating into whiteness feels frightening or overwhelming, we understand. We are not asking anyone (particularly those from marginalized communities) to put themselves at risk of injury or harm. Fascists are dangerous (particularly to People of Color, female-identified persons, Jewish people, Muslim people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community), and it is important to recognize the difference between someone like Tyler, who’s not a fascist, versus an active hate-group member, as they require different responses.
