Chapter 19
âHow was the party?â Kayla squeals as soon as I walk into the door of my apartment. Itâs just like her to be all giddy over an anniversary party. âHoly shit, what happened?â Sheâs on her feet and running toward me before I can say anything. âAre you okay?â
Esteban and Jesse look up from their video game as Miles comes down the hall.
âHoly shit?â Miles yells. âWhat the hell happened?
Dammit, I was hoping they wouldnât notice. Fat chance of that. The swelling is gone. My right eye is dark purple underneath. The left isnât so bad. Thank God the dipshit didnât break my nose. It hurt like hell at the time and I deserved every bit of that pain.
Now, my roomies, plus Kayla are hovering around me.
âI take it Meg has a new boyfriend,â Esteban says.
âFuck you.â
âAww, shit,â Jesse says. âYouâre right, Stevie.â Esteban hates to be called Steve, so it brings me great pleasure right now to hear Jesse poking the bear.
âFuck you,â he tells Jesse.
Kayla slices her hands through the air. âThatâs enough. No one is fucking anyone right now.â
The four of us boys start laughing.
She glares at Esteban. âKeep laughing and no one will be fucking tonight, either.â
âSorry, babe. As you were,â he says, gesturing for her to go on.
âAs I was saying, what the hell happened?â
We sit down at the table and I give them the gory details. I get slapped in the head by Kayla when I tell them what I said about Megâs ass.
âWhat a dick move,â Miles says. âIâm disappointed.â
âYouâre lucky they all didnât take turns swinging on you,â Jesse says. âEven Iâm not that much of an asshole.â
âAll right, all right,â Esteban says. âI know thatâs not the end of the story. You apologized, right?â
I finish the story, telling them about how I went to Megâs. How she was wearing her Berkeley hoodie. And I tell them all about someday. By the time Iâm done, I swear Kayla is batting her eyes and fucken Cupid is sitting on her shoulder shooting arrows into the sky.
âI hope it works out for you, buddy,â Esteban says. âBut donât lose your shit again.â
âIâm not,â I tell them. âI got it all under control. Iâmââ
âBalanced,â they all say, finishing my sentence.
The guys go back to what they were doing before I arrived with black eyes. Kayla stays with me at the table to talk about my parentsâ party.
âWas your mom livid, or what?â
âNot about the shiners ruining her anniversary pictures, but she was pissed about what I said. She would barely talk to me.â
âThat sucks. Iâm sorry.â
âToday, my dad reminded her about something he did when they were dating. She still wonât tell me what it was. Probably has something to do with sex or else sheâd tell me.â I laugh. âShe told me she knew better than anyone that boys do dumb shit in the name of love, she just wished the men in her life werenât so damn stupid.â
âI love your mom,â she says.
