Chapter 12

~o0o~

A lthough it was too soon to tell in the long term, so far, Carl felt working for Konrad Huber was going well. He basically filled the same position on the Omaha Weltchronik that Fritz held on the Missouri Staats-Zeitschrift. In addition, Konrad had already sent him on one investigative reporting assignment with the promise that, if his article was well-received, Carl might be given similar assignments in the future.

It was enough that Carl, that same afternoon, sent a telegram to his father. In it, he resigned his position at the Missouri Staats-Zeitschrift and suggested a replacement be hired. Even as he handed the message to the telegraph operator to send, the bitter thought flitted through his mind that his father might be getting along well without him—no replacement necessary. Once outside the telegraph office—his message on its way—he inhaled deeply and told himself to think more positively of his decision. If need be, his father would always find work for him. However, this was his chance to prove he could strike out on his own and succeed.

With that thought, he looked at his watch and realized he had enough time to check the bookstore. He asked Konrad for where he could find a German-English dictionary. After ignoring Konrad’s teasing and refusing to satisfy his curiosity about why he needed one, he was given directions. Caught up in everything involved in the job Konrad offered, days had passed without Carl buying the promised book for Brunhilde. He just hoped she did not think it was his nature to be so lackadaisical.

As soon as he purchased his book, it was time to return home—home for now. Since Tante Sophie did not employ a cook, Carl stayed in the old cook’s bedroom next to the kitchen. However, after the big assignment involving travel Konrad offered him, he intended to use the pay he saved to look for a room close to the newspaper. He enjoyed Onkel Gustav and his family. However, he did not appreciate his uncle’s constant prying into what he was doing. He particularly did not like being questioned regarding his destination each time he left the house. When he prepared to move into his own living quarters, he would assure his relatives he would see them at church and, if invited, join them for a Sunday meal. Otherwise, it was time for him to learn to become his own man.

Then there was the other issue. It would also minimize his contact with Brunhilde.

Hilde was proving to be a great distraction. Much to Carl’s dismay, just thinking about her almost always started his heart racing. Those times she was able to get away from Oma Bergmann’s room long enough to join the family for supper, he found it difficult to keep from watching her the entire time. He listened to—and hung onto—every comment she added to the conversation. Yet, he knew he should not—not if he wished to assert his independence and achieve his goals.

As much as he felt attracted to Brunhilde, she was not American.
