AGS

I suck in. The waves of the ocean literally move and crash in the Cassio painting on the opposite end of the room. It sits next to other paintings by some of the most famous artists in the universe, and the beauty of them give me a tiny bit of reassurance. It’s an exact copy of the one on my ship. I flew all night, so I could come to the council meeting in person. Dozens of politicians lounge in lighted purple desks, and I stand alone up front. Mom is completing training a few galaxies away, but there was still a part of me that hoped, somehow, that she could make this meeting. She should be here.

I grasp the purple podium until my fingers turn pink. This room is much bigger in real life, and the council members look more bored. It reminds me of the last time I was in this situation.

My arguments meant little to them then. I was new. It was my first day. Now, I’m still new, but I’ve met the Foxians. I’ve transformed into one of them, so I’m not as ignorant as I was. This time I won’t drown. I’ll stand with my ship.

Hos smirks as I continue to stand there, mouth agape. The governor gives me a thumbs up and a weak smile. Does he believe in me, or is this all about getting in with Mom?

I cough, dazed, but then I lean into the microphone. “I’ve spoken to the ruler of Foxia, and he has admitted that three billion of their species are coming to Earth because their planet is dying—but not to wage war. To immigrate.”

The politicians cheer. This is good news for them. They want to prevent attacks among planets, but immigration between worlds is not their concern.

I raise my hands, quieting them.

I hate the tactic I’m about to use, but they need to take me seriously this time. Fear motivates. I know because terror motivates me every day. “Now, I want you to consider what that means. Earth is a small planet with only seven billion people. Even if they don’t take over now, the Foxians are much more powerful, stronger, and have superior technology. Once on Earth, they’ll change their minds. They’ll enslave humanity. It won’t end well.”

A politician with an extra long nose mutters to an older one with a painted rose across her cheekbone. Hearsay. Pure hearsay. Many shake their heads, saying that Foxians need to live somehow. Isn’t it only fair if they seek refuge?

I tighten my grip on the helm. This time they’ll listen. I hope. “Earth may not have many resources. But compared to Foxia? They’ll have two hundred times the amount. And triple the bodies with human aid. Imagine what they could do. Who they could conquer—”

The voices pause. I’m sure they are considering the ramifications of fighting Foxians now.

But my plan isn’t to fight Foxians. I just wanted to grab their attention. Now I have it.

“That’s why we need to step in.
