A few hours later Kimberly dropped off Charles at his hotel so he could get the rest of his things packed up. He’d paid a weekly rate and had one more night already paid for, so they’d decided that she’d pick him up the next morning and take him to his doctor’s appointment with the plastic surgeon.

It was dusk as she drove into the parking lot of her apartment complex. She parked and lugged her rolling suitcase out of her trunk and started toward her building when a tall blond woman stepped out from behind one of the columns near the elevator.

Vanessa.

Kimberly froze.

“Whatsa matter, sugar? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Vanessa’s nasty tone made Kimberly grit her teeth.

“Hello, Vanessa.” Kimberly tried to keep going, but Vanessa stepped in front of her, blocking her way. “What do you want?” She kept her tone even, although inside her heart did a backflip in her chest.

“For starters, you can leave my husband alone.” Vanessa rocked back on her heels, crossing her arms over her chest.

“I think you should take this up with him.”

“Oh, yeah? Well, I’m takin’ it up with you now, you little home-wrecking bitch!”

Kimberly couldn’t believe her ears. “Me? You’re blaming me for your marriage being over? Vanessa, that’s ridiculous. You and Charles haven’t been happy in ages.”

“Of course you would say that. You’re after my husband!”

Kimberly shook her head. It was clear this conversation was going nowhere good. “I don’t have anything to say to you, Vanessa.”

“Well, I have plenty to say to you!”

Kimberly rolled her suitcase onto the grass and wheeled around Vanessa toward her apartment. Thank God she lived on the ground floor, and didn’t have to run up a bunch of flights of stairs.

She headed toward her door but Vanessa followed, undeterred.

“You stay away from my son, too!”

Even though she knew she should ignore Vanessa and march straight for her door, Kimberly couldn’t stop herself from whirling around and defending herself. “I’m not going to do anything to your son, but how do you expect Charles to see his son when you send him to a camp four hours away? The man doesn’t have a car because he sold it to pay off your bills. He needed a ride. You can’t expect him not to want to see his son! He almost died, for heaven’s sake!” The woman’s expectations were utterly unrealistic.

“You know, you are a real piece of work. Coming to work for our company, acting all innocent and sweet, when the whole time you’ve got your eye on my husband. How long have you been fucking him, you tramp? Huh, how long has this been going on right under my nose? You’ve got some nerve, bitch!”

“Vanessa, nothing happened before Charles went to Iraq. I promise.”

Vanessa’s face crinkled with mistrust. “You expect me to believe that? Then you’re dumber than I thought.”

It was pointless to try to talk with Vanessa. Kimberly grabbed the handle of her suitcase and zipped toward her door, but she couldn’t help calling over her shoulder, “It doesn’t matter anymore.
