The day had started so beautifully. In fact, when Wrecker woke this morning, he hadnât stopped smiling until the shit hit the fan. He could still feel Johnnyâs body beneath him. Unfortunately, Wrecker could also still hear Johnnyâs denials ringing in his ears. Johnny had been adamant. He had known himself in the moment he had refuted being in a relationship with Wrecker. Wrecker had seen the surety in Johnnyâs eyes. Staying in Illinois would only be postponing the inevitable. Johnny might feel something for Wrecker, but whatever he felt wasnât enough to actually be with Wreckerâlike a real couple. Just like Wrecker had been with his football team, Wrecker was an embarrassment to Johnny. Wrecker hadnât stood for that bullshit with them and he wouldnât do it for Johnny.
âItâs a shame no team would pick you up after you came out. You were a lot of fun to watch.â
Wrecker tried for a smile. It was hardly the guy working the ticket counter at the airportâs fault that Wreckerâs life was complete bullshit. âThanks for that. I miss playing.â
The guy clicked around on his computer but kept up his end of the conversation. âWhat do you do now?â
Wreckerâs cellphone rang for the hundredth time since leaving Johnny behind. Johnnyâs name flashed across the screen. Wrecker turned off the device. âI own a coffeehouse in L.A. Itâs a lot more work for a lot less pay, but itâs still a dream come true.â Even Wrecker heard the bitterness in his voice. He hated everything today.
The guy flashed him a sympathetic smile. âThereâs another airport an hour from here. They have a flight to L.A. leaving in four hours. If youâd like, I can switch your ticket to that airport and get you a rental car for same day return at no extra cost.â
Wrecker just wanted to go home. Whatever it took. âSounds great. Thank you.â
Big blue eyes latched on to him. A shy smile touched the guyâs lips. âTrust me, I understand wanting to leave this town behind as fast as possible.â
Wrecker flashed him a sympathetic smile while trying his best to get the hell out of there. Despite knowing that getting back to L.A. as fast as possible wouldnât change a thing, he still wanted to get home. Coming here with Johnny had been a mistake. Or, hell, maybe it hadnât been. Maybe he needed to see that Johnny came from a wretched family so he could see the real Johnny. Johnny was such a mystery. He was quiet and kept his emotions close to his chest. If Wrecker was being honest, that had been part of the appeal. Wrecker loved a mysterious man. When Johnny looked at Wrecker, his expression never gave anything away, but his eyes were a different story. His eyes burned with silent desire. Wrecker should have known better.
âHere you go, Mr. Lewis. Your new boarding pass and receipt. Just take this over to the rental car area and theyâll get you on your way. It was nice meeting you.
