"So what now?" she asked. I'd pulled my pants back up and had allowed myself to slide down the wall. I was currently sitting on the floor and she was resting her head against my lap.

My fingers trailed through her hair, and I hated how good this felt. It was almost as if she and I had created a tiny universe between the 90 degrees that formed the wall and the floor. In this corner, we weren't enemies. In this corner, I wasn't some feared businessman and she wasn't the daughter of a Congressman.

In this corner, we were just fire and ice that had somehow mixed together to make steam.

"I'm sorry," I said honestly.

She looked up at me with those big brown eyes of hers and shook her head. "For what?"

"For what just happened. It shouldn't have happened," I said, trying to make sense of what I was feeling. I took her roughly and against the wall after she'd had a complete panic attack. It was wrong. Very wrong. And I was sorry for it.

"Oh," she said, shifting to sit up.

I tried to pull her back down. Bring her back to the safety of the corner, but she resisted me. She sat up and looked at me.

"So, you regret it then." It was a question, but she said it as a statement.

"I do," I replied honestly. Didn't she? What we had just done, the way we had done it, was wrong. I didn't know what I felt about Aubrey. My feelings were entirely chaotic and I needed time to sort them out. I knew she felt the same way.

If I was going to sleep with her, things should have been more organized, more defined.

"Leave," she said and I looked at her in shock.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me," she whispered, refusing once again to look at me. "Just leave."

Her words stabbed my newly exposed heart. I couldn't understand why all of the sudden she wanted me gone. I was just trying to do right by her. To show her love in a way that was more deserving of her.

No, not love, I reminded myself. As of twenty-five years ago, I didn't believe in love.

I stood and looked down at her. It felt wrong. This felt wrong. I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay with her, with her head in my lap as I ran my fingers through her soft hair.

This is why I didn't believe in love.

This is why I found comfort in the ice.

"Have it your way," I said before turning on my heel and making my way to the door.
