Chapter 10

Jade

A scream wakes me from my slumber. I open my eyes to see pure and utter chaos: The men have found us.

A dozen human males (never thought I’d have to make that distinction before!) have surrounded Vuka, torches in hand, their gaunt faces clouded in shadows and flames.

Kane’s scarred, thin face sticks out like a sore thumb.

All the inner peace I felt, the optimism that had slowly taken hold of me, disappears like a balloon that has just been popped.

“Get away from her, you beast!” Kane screams. “That bitch is mine!”

Vuka spreads his arms wide, his large, naked frame casting a wide shadow. He belts out a low roar that makes the earth itself tremble, and I scramble away until I find my back pressed tightly against the base of a tree.

During my hurried scrambling, I realized my ankle doesn’t hurt anymore. The biting pain is gone completely — did Vuka do this?

Instinctively, my eyes dart towards the forest’s edge. With my leg healed, I can finally make a break for it. Any other time, Vuka would hunt me down easily, but right now he’s distracted.

All the men are looking at him, a mixture of fear and awe in their eyes.

This is my moment. If I want to escape, I have to do it now.

My thoughts turn to Zoey, to Dev, to Makayla. They are my people, my tribe, my sisters. I can’t leave them all alone. I’ve already been away too long.

Before I give myself another moment to think, I stand up and slip between the trees, welcoming the dark cover of night. Behind me, I can hear the men still screaming at Vuka to get out of their way, and no one seems to have noticed my departure.

Forgive me, Vuka.

You’re different from every other man I’ve ever met. Or will ever meet, probably, considering the sorry state Earth is in. You’re dangerous and alien, yes, but you’re also kind, and caring.

Plus you’ve got a killer bod.

…I’m making a mistake, aren’t I?

I turn around to take one last look. I figured I’d feel relieved the moment I got away from the horned giant, but instead, I feel hollow and empty. All he’s done is protect me from harm, and I run away at the first opportunity? What kind of person does that?

To my horror, I watch Kane pull a gun out of his belt. Vuka’s skin is tough as nails, but I’m not sure if he can survive being shot.

I’m not going to take that chance.

“Hey, bastards! Yes, I’m talking to you! Looking for me?!” I scream at the top of my lungs. “Here I am!”

I have one trick up my sleeve that I’m sure will get their attention. Without thinking about it, I open my cloak and quickly flash the group of pitchfork-wielding men my nude body.

Their mouths fall open, and I’ve even caught Kane’s attention for a brief second. And that second is all Vuka needs.

He launches himself forward, moving so quickly he’s nothing but a dark gray blur as he slashes the gun out of Kane’s hand with a sickening crunch.
