CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“All right, let’s see what we got,” Ike said, only to be inundated with a multitude of options as the EI brought up the screen.

There were dozens of different powers to choose from, each with a description and video demonstration. Some of the students seemed to know what they wanted, choosing their powers almost immediately. Ike and the others watched as their bodies changed.

At first, nothing much happened. Then, slowly, the students started fidgeting. One shouted that they could feel something tingly, something hot creeping through their skin, like tiny ants walking up and down their arms. After that, a clunky, twitching feeling took over in their muscles, as if their bones were being rearranged from the inside out.

Some let out cries of pain as their bones elongated or their muscles bulged, while others simply gritted their teeth and bore the discomfort. When the transformation finished, they stepped back and examined their new forms. No one looked terribly different, but most seemed happy with the new developments.

Ike, however, was less sure of both his choices and the eventual changes. So far, none of the options appealed to him. He found himself drawn to the “other” option yet again. When he clicked on it, he was overwhelmed by the hundreds of different abilities that appeared on the screen.

He started to panic. The timer was counting down, and he was still unsure of his choice. His EI tried to assist him in narrowing down his options, but Ike was having trouble focusing. Every time he scanned a new line of potential powers, he felt like he was missing something better in another line.

This went on for nearly twenty minutes. After much deliberation and several warnings from his EI, Ike finally settled on three potential powers: speed, healing, and absorption. None had been on the assistant’s initial list, but Ike didn’t care. He liked these ones.

He had to admit, none of them were among the “cool” powers that many other students had chosen—those who had chosen within the first five minutes or so, anyway—but they seemed practical. He could see himself using all of them in different scenarios.

Besides, the closest powers he could find to “heat ray eyes” one kid had asked about fell into Intellect and Talent because of how they were activated and managed. In the middle of a battle, he didn’t want to worry about whether he had enough static electricity to use his power or if he had too much and risked blowing up, if that was even how it worked.

He considered his shortlist again. Speed would be an easy choice. They all seemed to have enhanced speed anyway, and he’d gotten a taste for it. Super-fast travel and movement had obvious advantages, but the uptime and cooldown on the power gave him pause.

All the powers’ explanations had sections on both the uptime and the cooldown period. Most powers had an uptime of one minute, with a few minutes’ cooldown. This meant that he would have a minute of superspeed but would then have to wait ten to use it again.
