“We have a huge problem!” Alex bursts through my bedroom door with Luca all but dragging Jason behind him. He looks stoned out of his mind. What the hell?
Luca drops him on the bed and looks to his brother. “He no good.”
“Wha’ happened?” Aleric asks.
“Ava Malone is what happened,” Alex grouches. “She’s his mate, and she’s still in high school.”
“Holy shit!”
“That’s what I said.” Alex closes the door and sends a text message, presumably to either Connor or Micah or both. “This is not good. The girl’s father is an FBI agent. He’ll lock Jason up if he goes anywhere near her.”
“I guess it’s good Bree went home after all,” I mutter.
Alex either agrees or chooses to ignore that remark. “First, we have Alesha to worry about with her mate bond, and now Jason. This is not good.”
That is putting it mildly.
“What’s wrong with Jason?” He’s lying there like he’s eaten an entire plate of weed brownies or something.
“I had to make him no go near Ava. He will be fine.”
I forgot that Luca basically has control over the wolves—all animals, really. He can make them do whatever he wants. Alex hates it when he goes all Romani magic animal lord because it affects her too. Then again, I’m Aleric’s human servant. He can force me to do things as well, but he’s never used that against me. He’s never once forced his will onto mine. For which I am grateful.
“So, how are we going to keep him from doing something stupid?”
“Send him back to West Virginia.” Aleric stands from the window seat and comes over by the bed. “De boy needs to be far away for de bond to stop messin’ wit’ him.”
There’s a knock at the door. Alex lets Micah and Conner in. Micah takes one look at Jason and understands what’s going on. “Who?”
“The daughter of an FBI agent,” Alex tells him. “Aleric thinks we should send Jason home.”
“No.” Conner’s eyes are blown. “He needs to be here.”
“Why?”
“Because she’ll die if he doesn’t stay. His bond with her will keep the girl safe. Something’s coming, something bad. Something that has nothing to do with the island.”
“What?” Alex lays her hand on his shoulder. It helps him to focus. “What do you see?”
“Something dark. I can’t see its face or even tell what kind of thing it is, but it’s deadly. It’s coming. If Jason’s not here, I see that girl ripped to shreds, lying in a pool of blood in the hallway. That’s all I see.”
“Okay. Then we need to let Alesha know, and we’ll take shifts with Jason. He can’t be allowed near her. He doesn’t have the self-control our mother does. His magic just woke up, and it’s going to drive his senses into hyperawareness.” Alex clenches her fists, and Luca is there in a heartbeat. “I can’t let anything happen to him.”
“Nothing will, munya. We keep him safe. Promise.”
Without a word, Micah comes and wraps his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on the top of her head.
