When it came time for the inauguration to begin, the six of them were all standing armored and at attention, flanking the steps leading up to the stage. There was far too much panache for Mercury’s taste. A sea of people stretched out in front of him without end. On the countless VidScreens Mercury saw Prime Minister Elect Sazius Hedge accept the imperial blue Cloak of State from Prime Minister Liam Hughes. He then began reciting the Oath of Office with his right hand in the air.

The Maraccan noble was the picture of wealth and pomp. The noble family he led was one of the main contributors in maintaining Maracca’s caste system. Because of people like him, Zeroes were left to fend for themselves and Maracca VII continued to perpetuate its existence. There were even rumors that the Sons of Liberty were helping fill his purse in exchange for military hardware. It would certainly explain the expensive BreakerSuits they had possessed at the Bastion. For the next five to fifteen years Mercury would be defending that man. A grim smile crept onto his face. At least I won’t have to serve if I’m executed for killing Sol.

After the new Prime Minister had finished reciting the Oath of Office the millions of watching citizens cheered. All military members present saluted as per protocol, Mercury and the Angels included. Then Prime Minister Sazius began his commencement speech. The man could not move people nearly in the same fashion Liam could, so Mercury found himself focusing on the crowd. This was the first commencement speech he had witnessed as an Angel. Liam had served three terms.

Eventually though, the new Prime Minister began talking about something that grabbed Mercury’s attention. “I am happy to announce that my first executive decision as Prime Minister of the Supreme Federation will be to dissolve the Angels.”

Mercury’s heart stopped. So it begins. This was Sol’s first move of the coup. Now the Angels would be on his side. Tonight, Mercury would make sure the man paid with his life.

“I am eternally grateful to Genrik Rauss and his Angel Program,” the new Prime Minister went on. “You have defended this country from a very real terrorist threat. Now that the terrorists have been defeated and as a show of good faith to the people who sympathized with their cause, I will use the funds from the Angel Program to help bring about true economic reform for all the Federation’s citizens. The Angels have brought us peace and now it is time for us to move forward together!”

The audience’s cheering was like thunder in Mercury’s ears. Mercury and the others did not know a life outside of the Angels. He could feel the fear of his family. Where would they go? What would they do? What purpose did they have outside of being Angels? His chest began to ache as Mercury wished he could have told them about this. This was a bad way to find out.

“He can’t be serious,” Earth said over their private comm channel.
