Chapter 25

India was back on the train, heading for Leeds. She was trying to relax, knowing that a couple of days in Hawick were likely to be busy, as any day she spent with Charlie was. Except, of course, in her flat when she had hurt her ankle and her last night at his house. Some of the time they were together was peaceful, like real friends when you don’t even need to speak. She knew Tilly had a theory that Charlie struggled when there were other men in the room, she couldn’t decide if that was true.

In Hawick, they would be back where it all started. She was going to be staying with Robbie and Emma whilst Charlie was with his mum. Emma had invited everyone over for Sunday lunch so she could catch up with all the others in the family, too. She pulled out her kindle and had settled to read her book when they came to inspect tickets. India’s heart was in her mouth. She had been issued with a new bank card and although she was told there would be no further problems, she had come with extra cash and her own cards this time, just in case. One more week and Philip would be back in the country, then maybe she could relax more.

It was hard for the office to interfere when they were staying with the family on this trip. Charlie was going to meet her at Leeds station, and they would drive up together from there. He also had the camera she used two weeks earlier. Nick was impressed with the photographs she had taken and had given her a few tips to help with this set of images. Relieved that her ticket was OK this time, she settled again and checked her phone, finding a message from Robbie.

Robbie: What time will you get here?

India: Hard to say. My train gets into Leeds at 12:13 I guess it depends on traffic and if he wants to stop.

Robbie: I don’t think he usually stops – but he might with you.

India: Do you need me to text when we are close?

Robbie: That would be cool. Emma is working so I’m in charge of dinner.

Stepping onto the platform and out of the busy station, India headed for the pick-up point where Charlie had dropped her two weeks ago. She wasn’t standing there long before Charlie’s sleek Black Edition Porsche pulled up for her. She pushed her bag in the back and jumped into the passenger seat. Charlie smiled at her with his cheeky grin and reached over to squeeze her hand.

“Just checking you are real.”

“Hello to you too, Charlie.”

“So next stop Scotland?” His grin was infectious, and she returned it with a grin of her own.

“Oh. Yes!”

“Gretna Green?” India froze. Why would he say that? Was he trying to be funny?

“Why would you say that?” She snapped.

“I’m thinking I’ll have to marry you to get you to sleep with me.”

“Why would you say that?” she growled now.
