Because Frances Glessner Lee’s Three-Room Dwelling is still being actively used to teach homicide investigation techniques, the outcome of the real investigation is not public knowledge. The various theories portrayed here are the author’s best guesses as to what could have happened. It is worth noting that Frances was the heir to the International Harvester fortune. Thus her ability to endow the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard, and to later create the nutshell studies. Each diorama took approximately six months to build and cost roughly $6,000—the same amount of time and money it took to build a real house in the mid-1940s.

When Frances Glessner Lee died in 1962, all the programs she personally funded at Harvard were shut down, and the nutshell studies were moved to storage where they would have eventually been destroyed if not for her friend and colleague, Russell Fisher, who had, by then, left his position as Professor of Legal Medicine and Pathology at Harvard to become the chief medical examiner for the state of Maryland. He retrieved the dioramas and installed them on the second floor of his office, where they are still taught to this day.

The nutshell studies have left the Maryland office only once in the last fifty-five years—when they were sent to the Smithsonian as a special exhibit. All of them are considered works of art and are still in active use by medical students and police organizations to teach Frances Glessner Lee’s methods of forensic science.
