Chapter 13

With the minister gone there was little left to do and at eleven at night she decided enough was enough and went to bed. Living in London with a life of parties, holidays and having a business to run had created a body that had not gone to bed at eleven since she was an adolescent. Tossing and turning in the four poster bed her mind would not let her rest. It paraded images that she feared and craved behind the darkness of her eyes tormenting her with their vividness.

Every time she closed her eyes she saw white hair dragging over her skin, felt the remembered pleasure of it. She saw those deep red lips close enough to taste; saw the raw sinuous power in Bridget’s body as she writhed against her tongue. Every time she tried to get to sleep she remembered the warmth of her hand against her skin and the sparking sensuous pleasure of her nails as they dragged against her flesh. It drove her to distraction and finally sighing in frustration she threw the bed clothes off and got up.

Standing in the kitchen she poured herself a coffee and went back upstairs. Sitting on the bed she reached for her phone. What harm could it do? Steven was cheating on me. I’m single so it’s not like I’m even doing that. Her fingers trembled as she found Bridget’s number and she sat staring at it as it glowed on her phones screen. Are you prepared to become something different Mary? Are you prepared for your friends to see you and whisper, there goes the lesbian?

Her thumb stabbed forward and she stared at it horrified before slowly bringing the phone up to her ear. Times slowed to a crawl as she brought her phone up to her ear and she heard the ringing tone loud against her shallow fast breathing. Each second it rang her heart beat faster, each second it was not picked up the lead weight in her stomach seemed to grow heavier. Each second more she worried Bridget would ignore her.

“Mary” Bridget’s voice breathed down the phone and suddenly everything she wanted to say everything she needed to say became impossible. “What can I do for you tonight?” The soft Scottish lilt made the implicit promise in those words as ephemeral as a dream. Mary breathed heavily, found her voice taken by the sound in her ear as she struggled to speak.

“I know it’s late but can you come over? I’d like to talk if that’s alright” her voice stammered as she talked and her heart raced as she waited for Bridget’s answer.

“Just talk Mary?” There it was the loaded question that she feared to answer. She knew if she did she couldn’t take it back, couldn’t stop the storm of judgement that would follow and there was a part of her that didn’t care, didn’t want to stop it.

Swallowing her throat hurt and she whispered “No” Barely audible but she could feel Bridget smile down the phone over the thudding of her heartbeat in her head.
