Claudia washed Mark’s blood off her hands. The water gushing from the faucet was soothing as she placed her hands beneath it. Blood ran off her fingers and disappeared down the drain. Sabine’s low murmurs and shuffling feet emanated from the room beyond. Then Mark’s low groan joined them. He was awake.

Claudia entered the bedroom, relieved to see Mark’s eyes were open. He lay propped up in the bed where Claudia had placed him upon their return.

Sabine had run to her room for bandages and medicine while Claudia removed Mark’s Chimera suit and part of his underclothes to reach the wound. She’d started shaking, then Sabine’s voice had reached her. “Go wash up, dear. I’ll take care of him.”

The ride back had been a blur. Claudia had barely been able to navigate the roads with Mark slumped against her, especially coming back into the city. He’d been conscious enough to hang on, but the pain had grown intense enough that he blacked out when they reached Sabine’s. He was conscious but not enough for Claudia to question him.

“What happened to him?” Sabine asked.

“I don’t know,” Claudia murmured.

Sabine lifted a glass of water to Mark’s lips, and he drank. “You should rest, dear. I can watch him.”

Claudia nodded, feeling numb. The thought of losing Mark nearly paralyzed her. She returned to the bathroom and removed her Chimera suit, then changed out of the black clothes underneath, trading them for silken pajamas. Back in the bedroom, she found Mark was alone and heard Sabine downstairs. Probably making tea. She slipped into the bed beside Mark.

His eyes were closed, but as she scooted beside him, he rasped, “Claudia?”

“I’m here. You’re okay.”

His hand moved across the quilt, searching for hers. Claudia laid her hand over his and murmured, “Go to sleep now. You’ll feel better when you wake up.”
