CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
âThe realm of gods & demonsâ¦are of the substance of dreams.â
~Joseph Campbell~
My heart, beat erratically, my palms were sweaty, my eyes blurred. I searched the dense forest, unable to see what hunted me. I held the iron blade tightly in my hand, swinging it around me as I continued to scan my surroundings.
This dream was nothing like the ones where Beau and I met. This one was meant to ignite fear. I'd let my guard down with Beau, and I realized I'd let my focus wane. In the end, Beau was a predator, and I was his prey. One of us would eventually surrender, and in doing so, blood would spill.
I could sense whatever beast was out there, watching me.
"Come out!"
I instigated it, my hand shaking as I 07held the blade in front of my face.
"Show yourself!"
I startled as the howl of a hellhound echoed around me. Not thinking, I took off running. This wasn't Beau, it couldn't be Beau.
Why not?
That soft whisper in my subconscious sent my heart racing and I struggled to run faster. The cracking of twigs echoed all around me and I could hear the animal's harsh breath at my ear.
Run.
It was the only thought that kept replaying in my head. I had to run. Run far away where no one could find me, where nothing could touch me. The clouds grew overhead, blocking out the sun and graying the sky.
"Elora!"
"Momma?"
"Come home, Elora. I miss you."
I was suddenly watching my mom in the kitchen. The phone pressed to her ear as she begged me to come home. I always came back to this moment. Thinking that maybe if I had been home that night, and not running away from everything and everyone, that I could have been here to save her.
My heart broke as I watched her tears fall. I loved her more than life itself. Falling to my knees, I sobbed with her.
"She suffers because of you."
My eyes flew up as Ashdemai appeared in the kitchen, standing beside my mother as he petted her head.
"Don't touch her!"
He smiled, in that malevolent way of his, and continued to do as he pleased.
"She continues to cry for you with every day that passes. For all eternity,â he chuckled.
I watched him as he continued to run his hands through her hair.
"If you give up your soul, maybe we can come to an agreement of some sort."
"Fuck you."
"Oh, well that's not nice."
"I know you well enough to know you like manipulating the truth to fill your twisted needs."
"Is that right?"
His hand drew down to the knife my mother had been using to chop vegetables.
"So you honestly believe your true and loyal mother is up in the heavens with those detested angels?"
I became overwhelmed with doubt. My mother had been good. She had lived her life as best as she knew how.
"My mother was good."
"No one is without sin, Elora. Not even you."
"If that were the case, then all humanity would be damned."
"But it's not all of humanity my
