She took a breath, but then the words kept coming. “And I didn’t mean for Mr. Buckworth to get all splattered and his suit turkey-ed up. But if you ask me, he could use a new suit because he wears that same one all the time on TV and—”

“Bean,” Dad interrupted, “I’m sorry, what are you talking about?”

“You don’t know?” she asked.

“Know what?”

“Oh, thank you,” said Fiona. She put her head down on the table in relief. “I mean, nothing. Definitely nothing. I was just mixed up about something. Forget I said anything.” Finally, something had gone her way.

They sat quietly. And then she wondered why her dad wasn’t saying anything. “What’s the matter?” she asked, lifting her head. Now that she wasn’t in trouble, it was safe to ask.

He gave her a smile. A phony one. “Oh, nothing for you to worry about, Bean.” He mussed her hair and then got up from the table. “Mom called a little while ago.”

“Did she get my message?”

“I don’t know,” said Dad. “She didn’t say.”

“I guess it doesn’t matter now, anyway,” said Fiona, scratching her cheek. “What did she say?”

“She was getting on a plane. Scarlet and Nash are getting married again, and they are shooting a honeymoon scene in Bermuda next week. She said she would call again later.”

“Last week she pushed him off a boat, and this week they are getting married. Don’t tell Mrs. Miltenberger,” said Fiona. “She went through a whole box of tissues last time they got married.”

“Right. Don’t tell Mrs. Miltenberger. Got it,” said Dad.

“Will she be home after her honeymoon?” asked Fiona.

“Mrs. Miltenberger?”

“Very funny,” said Fiona.

“Not right away,” he said. His back was to her as he rinsed the breakfast plates.

“Oh. Don’t you wish Mom didn’t live in California?”

He sighed and said, “I wish California and Ordinary weren’t so far apart.” He looked over his shoulder at Fiona and smiled, another phony one. “Now, who wants lunch? I can whip up some turkey sandwiches.”

Fiona groaned.
