CHAPTER SEVEN

“How in the hell am I supposed to tell her I’m even considering retirement? How can I explain that? Huh?” Brett ran his hands through his hair, pacing the room. “I don’t even want to retire, Kris.”

“I know, but what choice do you have?” Kris lounged on the edge of the counter, one leg swinging with the other curled under him. “Our family should come first. I mean, dude, your dad is sick and you’re the one who’s supposed to take over.”

“Why can’t you do it?” Brett sounded desperate, he knew it. He just didn’t know how to walk away now. There was too much to lose if he did. And Cassie. He would never see her again. Sitting at dinner, watching her across the table, so close he could just about touch her. Brett couldn’t deny it, couldn’t deny how he felt for Cassie Winters.

“Man, you know I can’t do it.” Kris tossed an almond in the air, caught it in his mouth, and chewed slowly. “You know how this works. You’re the chosen and all that shit.”

“But I don’t want it, Kay. Not ever, but especially not now.” Brett flopped in the nearest chair. “We had a deal. I said the words. Now I know what they meant. Doesn’t that mean I have another year? Isn’t the pact a two-way street?”

“I don’t know. You need to ask your mom that shit. I’m still pretty new to things.” Kris popped a few almonds in his mouth and chewed with his maw wide open. “She’s gonna be done talking to your dad soon. What’s your play?”

“I don’t know.” Brett hung his head in his hands, his hair flowing around him like a wave. He wanted to hide behind it forever. Just be Brett McCarthy, linebacker for the Bears, get married, have a family, retire, maybe coach a few years, that’s it; why can’t he have that life?

“If you’re gonna retire, you should do it before the season so they can find a replacement for you, not like that’s possible, but give them a chance to try,” Kris reasoned through a mouthful of half-chewed almonds.

“You’re retiring?” Cassie’s voice filtered through his curtain of hair, smaller than usual, tighter.

Brett jerked his head up. “What? No, I mean, I don’t know.”

“How could you? How could you do this to the team?” Cassie hissed at him, her face flushed with fury. “I’m here spending time with you and your family, trying to support you and you’re just going to walk away from the team? When were you going to tell me—I mean us?”

“Stop, please don’t do this here, not now.” Brett tried to calm her down. He jumped out of his chair, trying to ignore it as it clattered to the ground. “Cassie, can we just go outside to talk about this?”

“No. I’m not doing this at all.” Cassie practically screamed at him, her eyes burned with something fiercer than Brett had ever seen and given his family’s heritage, that was saying something.
