I gazed out the window of my second story office. Down on the street, residents of Hunterville were shuffling down the sidewalk as they go about their day. A man and woman sat at the small table outside Ivory’s, laughing and sipping their coffee. A gray-haired woman dragged her husband by the hand into the quilt shop next door, his hesitation obvious even from here. Cars slowly made their way down the street, headed towards the bridge crossing the Hunter River.

And if I squinted hard enough, I could just make out Nikki’s small sliver of store front three blocks away. A smile crept across my face at the memory of her sweet lips pressed against mine. The way her soft body gave in to my embrace made my skin tingle with excitement.

My eyes glanced down at the phone sitting on the corner of my desk. I’d reached out to Nikki the day after I’d visited her at the bakery and asked if she needed any help with the clean up, but I got no response. Figuring it was just a matter of timing, I gave it another four days and sent a quick text. Still no reply.

I wondered if I’d done something wrong. She seemed to enjoy our kiss, so I didn’t think she would ghost me. But even though I sensed her excitement, I had a nagging feeling that Nikki was avoiding me.

What had happened a week ago was a delightful tease. I wanted more than just a kiss. She had been haunting my dreams and I had to have more. I yearned to feel her on me, no clothes between us, only our bodies merging as we became one—

“Mr. McGovern?” Haley Johnson’s voice cut through my day dream, snapping me back to reality.

“Yes?” My chair swiveled to face her and her brother.

Haley handed me the papers she had just signed, along with the pen used to do so. “Is that all?”

My eyes scanned the forms. Black inked scribbles filled the boxes next to the SIGN HERE tags Mary had placed there this morning. “Looks good to me. We’ll get these mailed out for you.”

“Great.” Haley let out a sigh of relief. “You don’t know how big of a help you’ve been for us, Mr. McGovern.”

“Please, Ms. Johnson, call me Oliver.”

“Yes, Oliver. Of course.” An embarrassed smile spread across her face. “Your father had been so good to us and it devastated us to hear of your loss.”

“Thank you.”

“We’re so glad you’re here to take his place—“

“Yeah, we didn’t know who else we’d go to,” her brother, Kyle, interrupted.

“Kyle, hush.” An uneasy glance passed between them.

The tension in the air was thick. “Is there a problem?”

Haley waved a dismissive hand. “Kyle just has a bit of an issue with your brother is all.”

Oh? This was news to me. What did Josh get himself into this time? “I’m sorry to hear that.”

“It’s nothing—“

“Haley, he’s been nothing but a pain in our asses since—“ Kyle interrupted.

“Kyle! Stop.” Haley’s jaw set. A steely eyed glare stopped her brother’s rant.
