Mackenna had been wrong. Aalim and his family still lived. At least Darren thought Aalim’s wife and child still lived. Mackenna had come to him about twenty minutes after Darren had fled in revulsion at what his accomplice was doing in the basement. Mackenna brought Aalim with him, pushing the bound but un-hooded man in the back with the end of a short stick. Aalim tripped and fell face first to the gravel driveway and Mackenna sprung onto Aalim’s back and placed the stick under his chin up against his windpipe. Mackenna leaned in and spoke in Aalim’s ear.

“You be a good boy for Darren now. If you don’t, your little wife and your sweet boy will get some of that special love and attention from their Uncle Steve. You know what I mean.”

Mackenna yanked the stick tight against Aalim’s throat. Unable to breathe, Aalim wriggled and spluttered as Mackenna braced a knee on Aalim’s back for leverage as he got off. Upright and glaring at the prostrate form, Mackenna hawked phlegm, spat on Aalim’s back and said to Darren, “He’s all yours. I’m to stay here with the bitch and the brat.”

Long evening shadows draped The Grange as Darren drove the blue Ford Escape away from the house toward the two stone pillars that marked the entrance to the 250-acre property. The first section of the binder ‘immediate’ instructed him to get Aalim cleaned and taken home to Manchester. Aalim, silent and submissive, slumped against the passenger door, head on chest and eyes fixed on his feet. Darren, cautious of the winding narrow road of the Lake District uplands, stole a glance at his victim. Disgusted, Darren threw cold words at him.

“Listen, you miserable shit. You have things to do tomorrow. First, you will contact Borough Taxis and tell them you have decided to quit taxi driving because of the long hours. Second, you will call your son’s school and explain there has been a family emergency and he and his mother have gone to Egypt. You are not sure how long they will be away, perhaps a month. You will contact them when your son returns. Third, you will tell the same story to anyone who asks about your wife and son. Do you understand?”

An almost imperceptible nod accompanied a shallow exhalation as Aalim acknowledged Darren’s command.

“Good.”

Faces and bodies twitched and contracted with unspoken thoughts and emotions as each man retreated into himself. Thick, angry, silence hung between them until Darren stopped the car on Lytham Street, two blocks from Aalim’s home. Pressed against the passenger door, Aalim did not acknowledge the car had stopped. Darren, tense and irritated, shouted at his passenger.

“Hey, shit head. This is where you get out. Here is a cell phone. I will call you. Keep the phone with you at all times. Now fuck off to your house, stay there, and contact no one except the school and the taxi company. I will call you tomorrow and you can start saving your wife and kid.
