I had to go thirteen houses down, almost to the edge of the small town, to find the eighth body. I wasn't sure if I could even drag it back to my--

No, of course I could. What else was I going to do, let Sophie die?

But I was going to have to figure out some kind of game plan. This town wasn't going to provide an endless supply of bodies, and I'd checked over almost every house. There were only six left to check. After that, what? Sure couldn't walk the twelve miles to the next town and drag a body back from there.

"Figure that out later," I said, getting my hands under the body's armpits and dragging him backwards down the street.

"Hey!"

The sound of another voice was so unfamiliar after all this time that at first I wondered if I'd said it without realizing it. Then I looked around, confused. "Huh?"

"What the hell are you doing?"

The kid was a year or two younger than me, with shoulder-length, matted hair and a really pissed-off expression.

"That's Fred!" he told me, before I could try to explain myself. "We're gonna bury him!"

"Yeah?" I asked, looking down at the rapidly-decomposing man. "When?"

He puffed out like a rooster. "We are!"

"Well, so am I."

"You're lying."

"Look," I said, trying to come up with a story, since I didn't think it was a good idea to let this twerp know I was keeping a zombie in my backyard. "If you put one of these out it distracts the zombies. Keeps me safe."

"'One of these'?" he shouted. "I told you, his name's--"

"Don't care."

The kid glared at me for a few seconds, his gaze darting from my face to the gun tucked in my waistband. Finally he just balled his hands into fists and ran back to one of the houses I hadn't checked yet.

"Yeah, I thought so," I grumbled.
