“I have to admit our bungalow is super,” John said, as they made their way back to the main lodge for dinner. “That double hammock? And the outdoor bathtub, wow.”

“I told you it was special,” Cate said and held up her hand. “Just stop for a second and listen.”

“To what?”

“The rainforest breathing.”

The rush of the Daintree River was all he could hear at first, but gradually other sounds emerged. A whoop, whoop, whoop. A low twee, twee. Then a nearly earsplitting awk, awk, awwwk, followed by a throaty chuckle.

“What is that?” John asked, glancing around the dense foliage on either side of the path.

“I have no idea,” Cate said. “But isn’t it beautiful? Animals, birds, insects we’ve never heard before. And even familiar ones sound different here.”

“And the river is . . .” He was attempting a three-sixty, trying to locate the direction of the sound. “There?”

Cate nodded. “The lodge is set above the river, so there are steps—quite steep steps, from what I remember—on each end of the grounds. One here, by the main building, and another on the far side by the boat landing. We’ll hike the river trail tomorrow or maybe the next day if we do the river tour tomorrow.” She smiled in the dark and hooked arms with him. “There are crocodiles, though, so we’ll have to be careful.”

“I’m game,” John said heartily, if a tad strained.

Cate laughed. “We’ll stop at the desk after dinner to sign up. I’ll get you loving this place, one way or the other. You’ll never want to leave.”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Dinner first, before signing up for life,” he said, catching sight of a sign pointing to the lobby and dining room. “Up these stairs?”

“Up these stairs,” she said, grasping the rail and leading the way up. “Watch your step.”
