Chapter Sixteen

Lisa

The nurse comes in the following morning with my discharge papers. "Are you ready to take your precious girl home?"

Not remotely. I'm terrified to be on my own. I have no idea what to do with a three-day old baby. Am I supposed to sit on the couch with the boppy all day and watch TV in between bouts of nursing? I text Violet in a state of panic.

Lisa: SOS, I'm getting discharged this morning. I don't know what to do...

An awful thought hits me - how am I going to shower? Or pee? How do I parent this tiny creature and take care of myself?

Violet: Don't worry! I'll be over with some freezer meals after work today. In the meantime, take it easy and get to know your baby.

I remember that today is Thursday. The rest of the world is working. Danny will be restocking today. Everyone at Steele Conglomerate will be at the office, and me? I'll be "taking it easy." I breathe deep as I make eye contact with the tiny person in my arms. Her eyes are such deep brown, they're almost black. And fringed with long, thick lashes the color of ebony. I look for a hint of something from her father, but I don't see anything. I should be relieved. Instead, it makes my heart hurt. Even in this miracle of a gift I'm now responsible for, there's no sign of him. I carefully place Polly in the layette next to my bed and change my clothes. My body is still tender, my belly thick and soft.

Behind me a knock sounds on the door. "Hey there, mama," Danny calls. "Thought you could use a ride home?"

I'm so relieved to see him, tears fill my eyes. Baby hormones are real. "How'd you know?"

"Violet contacted me."

Of course, she did. "Do you want to carry your goddaughter?"

His grey eyes crinkle. "Thought you'd never ask."

He waits patiently while the discharge nurse goes over final instructions. "A lactation consultant will visit tomorrow afternoon to make sure your milk is coming in and you're both still doing well. Remember to rest and stay hydrated." She gives me an encouraging smile on her way out.

The tenderness in his eyes when he picks up Polly is achingly sweet. "You're going to be a great dad, someday, Danny," I can't resist saying as we wait for the elevator.

He scoffs. "I'd have to get a new line of work for that to happen."

"Would that be the end of the world?"

"People like me can't just pivot, Leese." He stops in front of a red Subaru Forester and presses the fob.

"No Lotus for your goddaughter?" I tease.

"Only the safest for this little princess." He arranges her in the car seat, then hands me the fob.

"What's this?"

He scrutinizes me, then breaks into a sheepish smile. "New company car."

"I don't understand."

"You need a car. Consider it a baby bonus from the company."

I shake my head. "Danny, this is too much."

His mouth thins. "It's not. I have more money than I know what to do with.
