Itâs Ms. Lombardi
Mila.
I thought the plane ride back to L.A. was nerve-wracking⦠that was nothing compared to sitting here at Entice. The opulent space is full of scurrying models, agents, and wannabes. Iâm numb. My entire body is about to implode. The thoughts of Daneâs tirade before he left hurt like hell, but it was a warm-up to the bomb that exploded on my life. My career is completely falling apart, my dreams splitting at the seams.
I pluck at the imaginary lint on my skirt, the occasional whisper filtering through my ears when someone passes by slut-shaming me, others look at me with pity. This is what Iâve been reduced toâpeople feeling sorry for me.
Reducing me to my problem and failing to see my power in facing it head-on. Itâs insulting and demeaning, and I have way too much pride to let myself get hounded and bullied by people staring down their noses at me. I stand up and blatantly glare back at these bitches, knocking their pedestals right out from under them by owning my life.
I make it all the way to the kitchen, the empty one, and grab a bottle of orange juice and a bagel. I donât have to watch what I eat anymore, so I smother on the cream cheese like itâs nobodyâs business. When I sink my teeth into the creamy deliciousness, I think about Nico and what he said.
Tyler should be dead.
I had the chance too, but I didnât. Why didnât I?
While contemplating my moral dilemma, I take another bite and come to the conclusion that I was wrong. Iâm woman enough to admit I shouldâve put a bullet right through his damaged, beaten skull. But that wouldâve been too damn far. Emotionally, thereâs no coming back from taking a life. Also, that wouldâve been yet another problem for my family, Dane, and the Giordanos to clean up.
My phone vibrates. I assume itâd finally be Dane getting back to me, but of course, it isnât. Why would I expect anything less after the tongue-lashing he gave me? Instead, itâs a text from my brother.
Nico: He knows.
I repeat the words in my head like some sort of endless loop, trying to understand what these ominous two words mean. Thereâs a lot to know about me lately. Instead of trying to guess, because clearly my brain is just not working, I text him back.
Me: Who knows what?
The minute it takes for him to respond adds to my anxiety.
Nico: Your bullet toting boy-toy knows our secret. MY SECRET.
Shit! My mind automatically goes back to when I was sixteen and Nico had just turned fourteen. I found him on the floor, propped against his bathtub, crying because some guy kissed him and he felt ashamed for getting a boner. The conversation we had that day still pulls at my heartstrings and reminds me of the vulnerability he still hides beneath his tough exterior. Nicoâs good at playing the part, whatever that part may be. He studies the situation and adapts, except when it comes to accepting himself.
