CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Alice rolled over, stretching an arm across the firm body next to her. She was sore in all the right places and felt amazing for having finally fulfilled one dream. She was right to wait all these years for Bogey. There had been times when she didn’t think he would ever return. Then she would remember Ruth’s advice about being patient and waiting for her handsome grandson.

Happy in her own thoughts, she couldn’t help but think about Cody and how his broken heart must be crumbling away. Seeing those pictures of Karen must have been devastating for him. They weren’t easy for her.

It was easy to see that Danny had drugged her. She wished that her sister had reached out to her sooner, asked her for help. But that was Karen. Always thinking she could figure it out. There wasn’t a way to figure this one out on her own. They all needed help.

“Did you know that you chew your bottom lip when you’re thinking really hard?” said Bogey in a sleepy, gravelly voice.

“I do not,” she laughed.

“Yep. You do. I could hear you nibbling away.” He rolled to his side, pressing her beneath him, doing his own nibbling as she laughed. “What were you thinking so hard about so early in the morning?”

“Karen. And Cody.” He nodded, leaning back.

“Yea, I gotta tell you, that was damn perceptive of Tanner to figure that one out. I should have seen it. He was always looking at her with puppy dog eyes. They could have had a good life together had she just refused to have dinner with Danny.”

“I suspect that he didn’t make it easy for her. Danny’s always had a way of getting what he wants.”

“Well, we need to make sure he doesn’t get what he wants. We need to get the paperwork drawn up to make Cody your official partner and the foreman of this ranch. You’re going to need to define all the things, all the decisions, that you’re comfortable with him knowing and doing.”

“I know,” she nodded. “The attorney is coming out this morning. Honestly, Cody knows more about this ranch than I ever will. I’m happy to continue to do the books and pay the bills. I can do all of that electronically from somewhere else. I just need him to make sure it’s still profitable.”

“He mentioned last night that he might entertain the idea of guests at the ranch to get a real ranch vacation. Something like a working ranch resort. Nothing big, nothing fancy. It’s all the rage right now. I guess everyone wants to be a cowboy.”

“That might be kind of fun. Mom and Dad thought about adding to the bunkhouse to create an experience like that. They just never got around to it. It would bring in tourists without totally selling out to Danny and whoever he’s working with.”

“Let’s get going. The guys are probably already up, and we need to get a lot done today. With them here, I think I’m going to find Danny and have a little chat with him,” said Bogey.
