I stepped closer to the door again, pressing my ear against the cool wood.

The only sound that could be heard was the mechanical buzz of my refrigerator as it rattled on.

Damn. This was looking like an ambush. In every single movie I’d seen ever, it always ended terribly when the good guy knowingly went into the ambush, thinking they had the upper hand or something.

But what choice did I have?

I guess I could run back downstairs, and then try to scale the fire escape while still hammered. If I didn’t fall off and break my neck, at the very least I’d alert whoever was inside that I was on my way.

Alright then.

It was settled. I placed my hand on the doorknob to open it, then pulled back. A kick would serve me better here.

Readying myself, I threw my leg into the center of the door. It flew inwards, smashing into the wall behind it and sending paint chips flying. I leapt inside, swinging my blade around in a wild circle to fend off any incoming attack.

My dad stood there, half-raised off the couch in a self-defense position as he stared at me.

I lowered my blade. “Dad? What are you doing in here?”

He straightened up, adjusting his coat a little. “I came to see you.”

My door whimpered and tilted downward as the top hinge broke loose.

I turned around and closed the door carefully, not really caring that it didn’t shut right.

“You could’ve said you were coming. Would’ve saved my door’s life.”

He rubbed his hands together. “I thought about it, but I was afraid you’d try and blow me off.”

Good point.

“Glad to see you remember your training though,” he said with twinkling eyes and a nod toward the door.

“Nah, I only started doing that after the cops showed up.”

That brought him down a little. Good. The bastard had no right to barge in here and expect us to hug it out.

“You want a beer or something?” I asked as I made my way into the kitchen.

“You know I can’t.”

I snorted, and opened the fridge. Annie remained silent in the drawer, probably to give Dad and I a sense of privacy. No doubt she’d share her thoughts after he left.

“So why exactly have I been graced with your presence, dearest father?” I asked as I cracked a beer.

He took a seat on the couch. “Our deal, remember? You promised to stay away from the crime scenes. And you have, correct?”

“Sure have.”

That at least wasn’t a lie.

Technically I hadn’t been to a crime scene since we last saw each other, though I don’t think dad would be all that pleased to hear about what I’d been doing instead.

“Please join me on the couch, then.”

My heart started to beat a little faster. Did this mean he actually did look into William’s disappearance? I moved to the couch, the cold glass of the beer bottle beginning to numb my hand.

“After we exchanged words at the vampire tomb site, I…I think you were right.”

I sat back, stunned.
