Chapter Seven
Midnight. The witching hour, as most people would say, but for Leah it was escape time. She planned to get as far away from Alistair MacKinnon as she could before he knew she was missing.
There had to be a village somewhere close and hopefully, she could find a job doing something to support herself until she could find a way back to her time.
The lovely gown she’d worn lay neatly across the foot of the bed. Dressed once more in her short set, Leah prayed the night air wouldn’t freeze her butt off.
Once she finagled a horse, the ride to the hoped-for village should warm her up. The bedroom door opened without a sound and Leah’s sigh of relief barely stirred the air in the silent corridor.
Sneaker-clad once more, she traversed the hall to the landing. Silence still greeted her ears.
Great, everyone had gone to bed.
Jubilation as well as sadness dogged her footsteps as she ran down the stairs to the front doors of the hall. This time her sigh ruffled her bangs. Good—no big lock barred her way. Leah pulled on the door handle and then stepped out into the night. Wind caressed her flesh until goose-bumps dotted her arms.
The stable was around back, but just in case Clarksey slept near the kitchen, she’d decided to take the long way around.
Moonlight sparkled on the dew-clad grass and graced the trees dotting the perimeter of the castle. The wooden structure she prayed housed several horses—or at least one gentle one—loomed ahead.
The door screeched just a bit as she let herself inside. Leah held her breath for a moment but no cry came from the castle.
Good. Now, to find that nice horsey.
Mere seconds later, she wanted to scream in frustration but didn’t dare. The only four-legged ride away from Alistair was a huge black beast.
Leah circled back to the stallion’s stall. “Nice baby, I’m not here to hurt you. I just need a lift out of here.”
Her whispered words had Leah looking around for something to stand on. No way could she put a saddle on this horse, but if she could manage to climb on top of the brawny mass of muscle, she could hold on to its mane.
Finally, her searching paid off. A box about knee-high was propped against the stable wall. She pulled it over to the horse and climbed on top of it.
“Okay, baby, here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to get on your back and you are going to be a nice horse. Right?”
A snort met her words. Probably not a good thing, but Leah had no choice. She had to get away.
With a quick prayer, she grabbed the coal black mane and prepared to mount. Leah managed to get one leg over the horse, but when she tried to swing up the rest of her body, she started to slide back down.
“Tarnation!”
Hands now slick with sweat and fear held on for dear life as she tried to stop her backward momentum.
Nothing worked and Leah prayed she missed the splintered box on her way down.
