Gopa meets Ram the following day. She expects a short, stout, dark-skinned individual because Latamavshi has told her that Ram is very different from his father, but she is pleasantly surprised. Ram is thin, tall, with a not quite fair but then again not so dark complexion.

He says little when they are introduced, but Gopa barely registers his reserved manner because Prem makes sure there are no awkward silences. His work as interior decorator — not a surgeon, after all — brings him into contact with the privileged janata and he regales Gopa and Ram with detailed stories about his clients. Ram is not even remotely acquainted with the Bollywood scene, yet even he enjoys listening to his father describe “star” homes that imitate lavish film sets; homes with acres and acres of plush red carpeting, winding staircases that twist and turn, mammoth chandeliers the kind under which the besotted hero seduces his heroine by singing maudlin love songs. Gopa, an avid filmgoer, is enthralled. By the time she is ready to leave, she concludes the last six days of her holidays have been the best, definitely.
