CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Bev and Dilva

You shouldn’t really drink on Monday night. Bev tries to have Monday and Tuesday night off wine, she’ll have a couple on Wednesday, a few on Thursday, then Friday and Saturday are fair game because it’s the weekend, and there’ll be a few glasses to come down with on Sunday night.

It’s been a right day, so, she’s okay to knock back a couple. Bev walks down the ten foot by the side of her house, along the back of the street towards Westbourne Ave. In her right hand she carries a bottle of flavored gin, and in her handbag are two little bottles of posh tonic that clink as she walks, brisk. She’s going to do what she ought to have done a few weeks ago when Dilva first started. She’s going to be her friend. Bev imagines what the Kurdish girl must think of her and she is sick with embarrassment. Without a thought, Dilva defended her this day and by God, there have not been many who have ever done that.

At Dilva’s house, she walks up the long path to the front door and raps on the glass. There’s the telly blaring in the front room and the sound of video games from upstairs. Dilva opens the door. She gives Bev a weak, almost ashamed smile.

“Can I come in?” asks Bev. She gets straight to the point. “I need to say sorry,” she hands over the bottle and Dilva takes the smooth glass in her hand. “I thought we might have a drink and a chat,” says Bev.
