CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Eryn

“He says he won’t work with DUO, only with us,” I informed, biting my lower lip.

Alder Shaw’s eight-inch garnet bust pursed his lips and frowned. “You did make it abundantly clear that he has our entire operation at his disposal, right?”

Lester shoved his head over my shoulder to peer at the image projected from the communications marble. “You can take your life-sucking stall and shove it up your keister, old man. I don’t do bureaucracy. Haven’t you ever seen Eraser or The Departed? There’s always a mole.”

“Firstly, not this agency. And secondly, what’s this about a stall?”

“See? Right there. Lying through his teeth, the bast—”

“He prefers rude appellations, sir,” I said quickly, “but I think it’s just his own brand of affection.”

Lester lipped at my shoulder with his velvet muzzle. “Sister here gets it.”

“I’m not convinced this is the wisest choice,” Alder continued, choosing to focus on the bigger picture even while his frown betrayed that his thoughts lingered on stalls and old men. “This is a mission of supreme delicacy, and…” And your track record hasn’t been the best.

My lips clamped into a thin smile. I could have done without the reminder. Those wounds were still so fresh, and while I couldn’t forgive myself, I had to do something to make it better. This was my first step on the path to—redemption was too strong a word. But I knew I could protect this unicorn. I had to.

The unicorn stomped his hoof. “Listen, silverback, it’s my way or the highway, and I made a deal with them, not you. I go back to my home grove, lickety-split, minus a few pitstops here and there, they get some apples, and this Malcan fellow will be permanently thwarted well before All Hallows’ Eve. Mm-kay?” Lester snorted, as if that was the end of this conversation, and trotted away to slurp some more coffee.

Alder inhaled a steadying breath. “I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t say: we are not funding any debauchery or YOLO shenanigans. No party buses, no extravagances of any kind, and I don’t care if there’s a good deal on Groupon. Understood? He is to be secured in his home grove ASAP.”

“Yes, sir. But, um, what’s a Groupon?”

“Larcen can explain it to you when he stops being a turtle.” And the red bust of Alder Shaw disappeared.

“Well,” I said, spinning around. “There’s no time to waste. You said you had a bucket list? Where do we need to go first?”

“Well, I certainly can’t go home looking like this.”

“Ooo!” Henrietta squealed, clapping her hands. “Spa day!”
