Chapter 23

Taylor stared at Octavius Quinn, even as the humanoid man gazed serenely back at him.

Your consciousness will be sacrificed, Octavius had told him.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Taylor demanded.

“The processes of your original organism will cease to exist,” Octavius explained. “But they will transfer to and continue in me, and I will be connected to my creator. So that he may experience your memories as his own and preserve them.”

“And that means?” Taylor pressed.

“Your life will continue, but as part of my creator, as I am a part of him.”

“Yeah, gonna have to explain that.”

“Normally I would not have to,” Octavius stated. “I would already have absorbed your traits completely and become you, or my creator would simply have absorbed your organism into himself through what your people call the Deep. But you are an Original, and therefore your traits are not yet fully transmissible.”

Taylor just stared at him, totally lost.

“Pardon my poor explanation,” Octavius apologized. “I don’t have to explain this world very often. Once or twice a century at most, at least nowadays.” He paused, as if searching for the right words. “As I explained earlier, you will eventually – with time – have your matter from your original world be replaced by this world’s matter. This process takes different amounts of time for different tissues. When they are replaced, your matter will be of this world, and therefore subject to the rules of transmission.”

“Which are?” Taylor inquired.

“If your traits exert strongly, you absorb that trait weakly. If you have a trait that exerts itself weakly on others, you will easily absorb that trait from others.”

“Okay…” Taylor stated. “I think I get it.”

“Eventually your traits will be transmissible to me,” Octavius continued. “I will begin to look like you, and talk like you. I will acquire your memories. Everything about you – the processes that are who you are – will be duplicated in me. And the me that I am now will be annihilated in that process.”

“So…you’re going to become like me?” Taylor asked incredulously.

“Not like you,” Octavius answered. “I will become you. I will be indistinguishable from you other than that I will maintain my ability to absorb almost all traits from my surroundings.”

“And what happens to me again?”

“At that point, you will be a duplicate of yourself, and that redundancy will be culled,” Octavius replied.

Taylor blinked.

“Culled?” he blurted out. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“Killed,” Octavius replied evenly. “Murdered. Made dead. Disposed of.”

Taylor’s eyes widened, a chill running down his spine.

“You’re going to kill me?”

“You will go on as me,” Octavius countered. “You will then live virtually forever.” The bastard had the audacity to smile. “I offer you the gift of immortality.”

“You’re offering you immortality,” Taylor shot back angrily. “You’re offering me death!”

“There will be no difference between you and me at that point.”

“Except I’ll be me!”

“Your life process will be identical within what used to be me,” Octavius pointed out. “This is the behavior of this world. Life can propagate the normal way, as it did in our original world.
