Kieran had me drive the marshals-issue SUV. He was tense and cranky. I understood that he thought this was a waste of time. I realized that going back to Daisy's Dukes reminded him of the drugged little boy taken to the brothel to be used as a sex object and to be disposed of… A little boy who would have cried had he known his dad had sneaked out of the house to take on this assignment.

"How's Nicholas doing?" Kieran suddenly asked me.

"He called. He'd just landed in Ottawa."

"You know you got yourself a lone wolf, right?"

"Yeah."

"And you know about lone wolves?"

"Um… are you going to enlighten me?"

He frowned. "We're alpha males in search of a family pack. I found mine." He gave me a sudden, sweet grin. "Play your cards right and you might be a family too, but we don't go down easy."

"No kidding," I teased.

"Smartass." He grinned. "Make a left here at the fork in the road."

Kieran leaned his head back and closed his eyes for a brief moment. "Jube knows we're here, Juan thinks we're picking up ice cream."

"Are we going to pick up ice cream?"

"Of course. That child has me wrapped around that cute pinky finger of his. Okay, bear right. Good God… it hasn't changed. Still looks like something off a movie set."

I craned forward to get a closer look through the hanging bowers of weeping willows and giant jacaranda trees. I noticed a sign welcoming us to Daisy's Dukes, Where Every Man is Made to Feel Like a Duke! as the tires crunched gravel in a sweeping driveway. The house sat like a big white box in a ferny dell of emerald green. It looked so gracious and… southern, it was hard to imagine it being the scene of some grizzly underground sex trafficking and a gruesome double homicide.

"They know we're here," Kieran said.

"It's like the house from Gone With the Wind," I remarked.

"Yeah. One day I'll take a torch to it. I promise you that." He paused. "Jesus… it can't be…" He leaned forward and squinted. He let out a groan. "Now I get why he wanted me to do this."

He was really pissed now. I rarely saw him like this.

I parked and he got out, stomping toward a pair of security goons who were so 'roided out they couldn't keep their arms by their sides.

"If you fucking try to frisk me or my partner I'll shoot you," Kieran warned. I had to run to keep up with him. In the doorway lolled an attractive, older African-American woman who was dressed in a ridiculous yellow and white lace gown straight out of central casting for a Civil War movie.

"Ma Jones," he said, standing in front of her, hands on hips.

"Marshal Fox," she tittered.

"You're coming up in the world," he said.

"Aw now, sugar, be nice."

"I am being nice. See, this is me, being nice." He lifted his hands in a helpless gesture as he turned to me. "Sean, meet the delightful owner of this establishment, Ms Eva Jones.
