NTN: profile
NTN, founded in March 1918, is the second key player in the duopolistic global CVJs market. The company was previously known as NTN Toyo but had changed its name to NTN Corporation by 1989 (NTN, 2006). In fiscal year 2015 (1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016), NTN accounted for an estimated 23 percent of industry sales (smaller than the 42 percent controlled by GKN); the Japanese fiscal year starts from April of the year concerned to March of the following year. NTN continues to be focused on growing its CVJ business whereas GKN prefers to focus on other sectors such as aerospace and torque management systems. For fiscal year 2015, NTN recorded revenues and net income of US$6.3631 billion and US$133.4 million respectively. As of March 2016, NTN recorded staff strength of 24,109 spread across more than 220 operating bases in 33 countries. The following Figure 5.4 indicates that in fiscal year 2015, NTN drew 70 percent (US$4.4542 billion) of its revenues from its Automotive Applications division; for that period, NTN’s CVJs business (2015 fiscal year revenues: US$1.7838 billion) which falls under Automotive Applications accounted for 40 percent of divisional sales and 28 percent of overall revenues. Although the Americas is NTN’s biggest market, the company remains heavily dependent on Japan (its domestic market), which alone accounted for more than a quarter (US$1.7759 billion) of its revenues for fiscal year 2015 (Figure 5.5) (Lorenz, 2009; NTN, 2011; NTN, 2016; Edison Investment Research, 2012; GKN, 2016).
