Fifteen minutes later Stella and I shared a small table in a quiet corner of the bar. Marla hadn’t even blinked an eye when I showed up for a second time that night. Maybe she was too busy serving drinks to a group of rowdy miners to even notice me.

"I need some advice, Rory." Stella sat across from me.

My friend was usually the one wanting to sling out the advice, so the request threw me for a second. "About work or—?"

She bit her lip. "Relationship advice."

My mind flashed to the litter of failed relationships I'd left in my wake before Ben came into my life. Stella was the stable, normal person with the stable, normal relationship. What could I possibly say that she’d find useful? "Are you sure?"

"I trust you, and I know that you've been wary of long-term stuff, so I think you might have the point-of-view I'm lacking right now.”

I scratched the side of my neck, my cowl neck sweater suddenly itchy and too warm. "I'll do my best." I silently prayed I’d be able to give her the support she was looking for without being crass or insulting.

"Matt and I got into an argument last night."

"Over what?" I'd never seen the two of them argue before, so to hear Stella bring this up made me think it must've been something serious.

"He told me he never wanted to work at the gas station and only did that to make me happy. To bring in some money to pay the rent." She swallowed. "And that I've been standing in the way of his dreams." Her eyes grew wet, and her voice went all sideways and squeaky.

"What?" I grabbed her by the hand. "What dreams?"

Stella's face fell. "I mentioned it to you the other night—flying lessons. He wants to be a pilot. I’m freaking out."

Matt had always seemed content in his quiet-yet-manly sort of way. He'd make sure Stella's car was warmed up and ready for her before she started an early shift at the Polar Cafe. He'd run out for more of her favorite diet soda even in the middle of a winter gale and minus thirty windchill. To me, he'd appeared to be so in love with Stella she could do no wrong.

But he’d never been a superstar in the classroom. Average kid, average grades. College hadn't been a consideration. Higher ambitions didn't seem like Matt.

Was that what he’d been up to? Could he have been taking flying lessons behind her back?

Maybe the other figure I’d seen in the truck with him had been his instructor.

“Did you tell him your feelings about it?”

"A long time ago when we first were dating, he talked about being a pilot. I mentioned how I could never do that—all those accidents you read about all the time. But I thought it was just kids talking, you know? We were seniors in high school. I wanted to be a travel writer. Remember that?"

A sharp pang hit my belly. "Yeah, I do." I tried to keep my voice even.
