She kept that resolve through the arrival in Indianapolis, and picking up the rental car. She let him drive to Bloomington. Conversation between them was pleasant, though he was mostly quiet and she worked.

At the hotel, she handled check-in, requesting two card keys. Abby had set them up in a suite, which had a king-sized bed plus a foldout sofa in the separate living room area. Keeping Lawrence close, but giving Ros the choice of how much space to put between them. Her friend knew her well.

They went up in the elevator without saying anything, but she noted he positioned himself not at her side, but slightly ahead of her. As the elevator opened on each floor, she had a human shield in front of her. When they reached their floor, he stepped out, glanced around, then nodded to her.

Now she took the lead, headed for their room. But at the door, he extended his hand for one of the key cards, obviously intending to clear the room first.

“Do we really think Snake is Jason Bourne?” She shot him an amused look. “We’ve done a lot to cover our tracks coming here.”

“If we treat him like he’s that smart, then it’s less likely he’ll be able to sneak up on us, right?” Lawrence checked the room, then returned to her, picking up the luggage items he’d put down in the entry way, moving them to the bedroom. “Gangs like his aren’t just a bunch of street corner thugs. The grandkids who know how to re-program the cable box at age three grow up to be street criminals as well as straight A students. And they watch a lot of the same crime and reality shows, which do give away some trade secrets.”

“Okay.” She gave him that point. “But…we’re safe for the moment?”

He nodded. “Do you want to do room service? Or we could do delivery or go out. Your preference.”

“Are you hungry?”

He shrugged. “I could eat. Whenever you’re ready. No rush, though, if you have other things you need to do. I’ll stay out of your hair until you’re ready to go somewhere.”

She nodded. He turned to go do whatever she expected staying out of her hair entailed for him, but she brought him up short with a hand that landed on his shirt front, curled in the fabric.

When he glanced back at her, he shifted his weight, anticipating her drawing him to her. She didn’t. She held that distance, but kept her grip.

They’d both shown their ability to maintain a casual façade. She was done with it. She didn’t like the weight, sitting low in her stomach like a bad lunch.

He knew the discussion on the plane had changed things between them, but he wasn’t sure how to deal with that. She could see it in his eyes. Fortunately, she did know how to deal with it. It might make the problem better or worse, but it would change the feel of it, and that was her immediate goal. Sediment couldn’t be removed as long as it was packed at the bottom of the lake.
